Hey. I’d like to spark a debate in this topic: these are 3 changes that I personally think the Church should make and I want to hear your opinions. Thanks!

1. Allow civil unions for homossexual couples, similar to France’s PACS or Italy’s recognitions. The couple would still have to abstain from sex and wouldn’t be allowed to adopt children. These unions would just benefit them because of taxes, healthcare, etc.

2. Allow methods of contraception that do not damage the sperm or stop it getting to its intended destination (such as the pill) in the following cases:
  • when pregnancy or childbirth might harm the mother
  • to limit the number of children in a family for the benefit of the family
  • to delay or space out having children
    • but a married couple should not use contraception for the selfish reason of avoiding having children altogether.
3. Regarding abortion, the Church should allow it when the pregnant woman is 16 years old or younger when the pregnancy is the result of rape, incest or when the girl’s life or mental health is seriously in danger.

I’m not sure what you expect to hear here, but everything you’ve suggested are changes that the Church has no power to accept nor condone because they’re all intrinsically evil.

Absolutely not.

Actively participating in homosexuality is a mortal sin.

God actually killed a person in the OT for pulling out during sex. Not for damaging the sperm but the guy did it specifically to prevent pregnancy.

Absolutely not. Thou shall not kill. Church can not change one of Gods Commandments.

Dear friend, I just have to say, three firm no’s.
The Church’s decisions are clear and declared, and we are to obey them.

No homosexual unions, no abortion and no contraception. The Church for years and years has been against this, and still is, and hopefully will be.

And not only would it go against Church teaching and Scripture, it would go against the beliefs of thousands of saints, blesseds and theologians who were holy and wise men and were against this.

Regarding the homossexual unions thing, I mentioned it because, when Pope Francis was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he actually thought that the Church should accept them as a compromise response to calls for same-sex marriage. I agree that homossexual sex is evil and completely against God’s will, that’s why it wouldn’t be allowed in my scenario. However, allowing the couple to receive some of the benefits that heterossexual couples already do wouldn’t be too bad, I think. But let me just point out the fact that I’m not crazy over this and I understand and accept the Church’s teaching on this. I’d just like to hear your opinions.

he actually thought
I’m surprised you know his thoughts… I have never had that skill. What do you mean by accept them? Of course we should accept the people, not the changes. Is this what you’re implying?

What benefits? And why should we compromise on any issue? We’re Catholics- it’s not out way.

Before he became pope and while serving as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio reportedly privately urged his fellow Argentine bishops in 2010 to signal the Church’s public support for civil unions, as a compromise response to calls for same-sex marriage.[5] Fellow bishops rejected the idea.[5] Other sources both support and deny this account.[6][7] At that time Argentina already permitted civil unions, and was debating a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.

Any better source than wikipedia, please?

But, relationships(in the sense of marriage or unions and so) between homosexuals should be not encouraged even the slightest bit.
We all need to help homosexuals to direct themselves towards holiness, purity and Christ Jesus, our Lord, and not to some unions and so.

Looking at the possibility is not exactly the same thing as urging his fellow bishops to support this. I’m fairly certain that those unions aren’t what he was actually referring to… rather what others would like him to refer to.

So just to clarify this: I’m not actually sure if I think the Church should make these changes. I’m just putting them out here so you can discuss with me if they would be acceptable or not. I’m rather new to the Catholic faith and I’m still learning about it, these ideas just seemed interesting at first sight. But you’re right, they won’t ever happen.

NCR is not a better source. The National Catholic Reporter has been told to take “Catholic” out of its name by the bishop whose diocese they reside in, and they’ve never complied.

And I thank you for telling me this. I’m still new to the faith, and I don’t know exactly what are the most reliable sources.

The Church doesn’t have the power to change teachings on contraception or abortion.
