What if a couple disagrees on more kids?

The reason I am passionate about this is becasue my marriage has seen huge blessing from understanding this prinicipal. Also, I have many friends and family memebers who I love that rejected this teaching and the results were bitter divorces that caused huge damage. Since I think this prinicipal is important than I hope to share it with others. God opened the eyes of my wife and I on this and we hope he does the same for others.
Lol, obviously there would be less divorce if the wife let the husband make all the decisions, as there would be less divorce if the husband let his wife make all the decisions.

But that’s not what marriage is about.

The reason divorces happen is because a couple doesn’t learn to compromise and to put the other first.

How many kids to have is a Spiritual decision. The start of a husband leading his child to heaven is to lead his wife to be in agreement to giving birth to a child.
What if it’s the other way around? What if the husband is the one who thinks having another child is a bad idea and it is the wife who wants another one?

The Church teaches that this type of discernment is between a couple and God. Not the husband and God.

Furthermore, a husband forcing his wife to have another child even though she feels she is physically and emotionally unable to have more WILL NOT help lead anyone into heaven.
When did I say that the husband is superior or that a wife is like a child? All I said is that there are times when God calls us to trust the leading of sinful people as a way to trust Him. The same goes with working for a boss…God calls us to submit to our bosses at work. Husbands are called to submit to the church leadership. If the husband sins and rules harshly then the preist should step in…Everyone is called to submit to someone in this life as apart of God’s plan. Jesus submitted to the will of the Father so submission to authority is a part of following Jesus.
You compared the relationship between wife and husband to that of parent and child on multiple occasions. Would you like me to re post those?

And now here it seems you are saying that a husband is boss to his wife. Do you reject the notion of mutual submission between wife and husband?

And also, Paul, you never responded to this:

Paul Fekete, are you meaning to say then that you reject the notion that a wife and husband have equal rights?

Do you reject this:
CHARTER OF THE RIGHTS OF THE FAMILY
Article 1
c) The spouses, in the natural complementarity which exists between man and woman, enjoy the same dignity and equal rights regarding the marriage.

You can’t really compromise on a binary issue. If one says “yes” and the other says “no”, ultimately one will have his or her way and the other won’t. There’s really nothing that can be done about that as long as the disagreement persists.

Yes you can. The compromise means sometimes doing things “her” way, other times it means doing things “his” way.

It does not mean the husband always has the final say every time that happens.

I don’t care which spouse is on which side, or who wins. By definition, it’s not a compromise.

Let me give you a real life scenario:

My husaband wants to name our future sons after his father, grandfather, and great grandfather (respectively). I do not.

^Here we have a disagreement.

When I give birth, I am adamant that I want to be the only one in the delivery room besides doctors and nurses. My husband is not ok with this because he wants to be there.

^Here we have another disagreement.

So what do we do? He agrees to look into other names for our future sons, and in turn I agree to let him be in the delivery room while I give birth.

Doing things his way sometimes while he let’s me do things my way other times IS the compromise.

I can’t think of a “bargaining chip” of comparable “value” to having or not having another child. “If you agree to go through another pregnancy, I’ll…” What?

No my point is that Jesus was still equal to God Spiritually even though Jesus took on the role to be submissive to the will of the Father. Being submissive as a role does not mean you are not equal in the eyes of God. That is a lie that is propagated by our culture. Is a worker not equal to his/her boss at work if they submit to their boss?

Well said. Kids are human beings with a soul and there is no “trade” one could make that equals the life of a child.

The rise of women making the decisions in the home as been coupled with the rise of divorce in this country. Is this just a coincidence? I would say the norm today (especially in the Northeast) is that women are the heads of the home and many men “check out” into their man caves or work late hours since they receive no respect at home. This puts a lot of strain on the marriage. Men crave Respect and Women crave sacrificial love. This is the way God made men and women.

Here is a “bargaining chip”…

The husband wants another baby, but the wife is opposed because of the physical and emotional hardship. He says, if you will agree, I will hire housecleaning services and will cook dinner every night during your pregnancy and for six weeks postpartum. This might sound reasonable to her, so she might agree.

Or

The wife wants another baby, but the husband is opposed because of the financial hardship. She says, if you will agree, I will cook more frugal meals and I will use other frugal ideas such as coupons and thrift store shopping in order to reduce the added financial burden of another person in the family. This might sound reasonable to him, so he might agree.

I can think of a way to complete that sentence. Assuming its the husband trying to convince the wife and typically wives are the ones who bear the brunt of the grunt work raising a child.

“If you agree to have another child, I’ll take on more responsibilities at home and enable you get some rest and time to yourself to recharge your batteries!”

In my experience, most wives that do not want more children make that decision because they are simply exhausted and feel like they have lost the ability to be social and pursue hobbies and interests because they (working or not) do more housework and are also the child(ren)'s primary caregiver. If they typical husband was willing (and proved it!) to lighten the wife’s load the wife might then be more open to another baby.

Perhaps men not getting respected is a newer problem, as you see it, but women not getting cherished has always been a problem. A lot of the divorce that happens these days are not a result of decision-making conflict, but as a result of a lack of love.

The original post suggests that such discussions as mentioned in the above two posts (171 and 172) were had, suggestions offered, but none was feasible or suitable for the dissenting spouse. And I did say “as long as the disagreement persists” when I stated that in a binary decision there can be no compromise. If the terms change and both spouses agree one way or the other, that is obviously better.

The reason divorces happen is because a couple doesn’t learn to compromise and to put the other first.
If, after trying to work it out togther, a couple disagrees about something and when they “put the other first” as you suggest then no decision will be made? By putting the other person first each person will defer to the other person. Since they disagree then you are still left with no decision. Anyway, I hope the best for you. I am sorry if I offended you in any way. My marriage is not perfect, but by God’s grace we are trying to follow God’s design for marriage. God Bless.

The men “check-out” and force the wives to make all the decisions is more like it if you’re going to start in with that theory. Instead couples of turning to each other, they turn to their friends, the media, entertainment, etc or they simply check-out altogether. Women that let their husbands make all the decisions abdicate their role of heart of the home. The so-called “head” is now doing all the work instead of their part. And it leads us back again to what is needed is a marriage partnership, not a boss and employee relationship.

Paul, I’m glad that your marriage works as it does. I think we all jump on the bandwagon when someone starts suggesting that “marriage has to be this way because we interpret this piece of scripture to say so and anyone that doesn’t follow exactly as we is doomed for trouble, or worse, they imply or flat-out state your rebelling against God if you don’t do as we do”. Not saying you said or meant those things, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, we do get those kinds of things here in this section of CAF, so when someone relatively new comes onto the forum and starts with the Ephesians thing, well…you can imagine how we veterans are wary. God bless you and your family.

I do trust my wife to make decsions for the best of the family. However, I answer to God first and then my wife second. God has given me clear instructions to lead my wife like Jesus leads the Church. For me to give the responsiblity of leadership to my wife is to disobey God. So this is not so much about me trusting my wife…it is who about me trusting in God and the plans He gave for roles in marriage. Do you trust in God’s plan for marriage or are you following a man made plan of 50:50? The Bible calls for 100:100 and then gives specific roles on how to 100% love and respect each other. If you do not agree then that is between you and God. Don’t hate the messenger here.
If by “God’s role for marriage” you mean the husband always gets the last say then I warn you again that that is actually contrary to Church teaching as found in Casti Conubii. Also, as I previously pointed out, you’re claim that the decision making process between husband and wife must always look the same is directly contradictory to Casti Conubii as well. Please stop trying to present this on a Catholic Forum as though it were God’s design when it is directly contradictory with official Catholic teaching.
You do realize that you are still exercising your “leadership” when you choose to let your wife make a final decision, don’t you? That’s the hardest thing I think men come up against in a marriage. Dying to self and realizing that in being humble (not a doormat, though), they are strong. It takes a heck of a strong man and leader to say “honey, while I feel I’m right on this one, I’m going to hand myself over to you and go with your decision on this one”. That doesn’t mean the poor husband is hen-pecked or whatever that old term is, it means that in a functional and flourishing marriage, decisions of that magnitude should not come up often (if at all) and the husband should know when to defer to his wife. That’ s a marriage. Anything less is simply putting the wife in the position of a child when it comes to making a final decision and that’s just plain creepy.
