What if a pope enters into a coma?

I imagine there would be someone elected as regent-like figure… and also, many previous Popes wrote statements of conditional abdication- Pope Pius wrote that if he gets kidnapped he will become Cardinal again and other Cardinals should vote for new Pope. Allegedly, JP2 and Benedict wrote statements saying that they abdicate if they fall to comma or otherwise incapable of acting out their duties.
What if a bunch of ennemies of the Church kidnaped the Pope and locked him away somewhere with no contact with the outside world. How long would the Church wait? What if we don’t even know if he is still alive?
I imagine that would be complicated. Historically people elected new Popes- but under current constitution that is not lawful. Some elected acting Bishops of Rome who led flock of Rome but did not act as Popes. However, during times I described above, new Bishops did not need Papal approval or anything like that.

By the way, I am also excited for New Pope series… but I also hope they won’t just uncanonically elect new Pope while Pius XIII is in comma… perhaps they will use abdication they tricked Pius into signing? But then that is also unlawful and by that Pius can’t reclaim his Papacy… yeah im theorizing too much 😂 but I am so excited and curious

The chances of an elderly man living 20 + years in a PVS is so outlandish to be impossible for all intents and purposes. People in this state die from pneumonia, sepsis, simple infections that rage in the weakened body.

Also, I cannot imagine a Pope who would want extreme measures to be taken in their health care, if nothing else the astronomical cost of such measures are what drive most people to have a person appointed as medical power of attorney to make the decision to move to a DNR.

2013 America article has the basic information as it stood when Benedict resigned. Most of it is still probably accurate.

The procedure is for the Camerlengo to certify the deathof the Pope. This should be a trusted cardinal to prevent premature reports of death. If a Pope is incapacitated, the Camerlengo would probably certify the “death” of the Pope and start the interim administration of the Church.

That is a guess on my part. It would have to be done with knowledge of JP2’s belief that his prolonged final suffering was part of his ministry as Pope.

I bet because of this movie/tv show, someone is right now in the process of developing a procedure, for a solution, for what to do, just in case, a Pope does go into a coma.

All because of the what-if thinking of writers…

FYI someone like Jude Law should never be a Pope.

Please do not be so defensive. I was NOT trying to hurt you in any form or fashion.
My premise is that I do not like what-if scenarios. You can what-if anything.

Do you mean someone like Bellardo of the TV show? Because I might agree with the decision to elect him was rash, but you’ll never hear me say some of his reforms aren’t needed in the Church… 🙃
If you’re talking about Jude Law, is he even Catholic?
