What do you think of the idea of all Catholics distinguishing themselves as Catholics by wearing a kind or style of garment? Muslims have garments, Hindus have a style of dress, ethnic groups have forms of dress…Catholic religious have garments.

Just as with any religious group, it’s purpose would be to identify each other, to be a witness, and to aid in identity.

We do have variants of this… there are tertiary orders of lay people who wear scapulars, and Miraculous Medals and the like can certainly assist in identification.

I get strange looks at the grocery store.

Don’t we?

“… put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (Romans 13:14)

I always like to see Catholic clergy wearing religious dress. (Preferably Catholic 🙂 )

Sometimes my scapular peeks out of my shirt. I guess that’s about as close as I get.

And I have had my rosary peek out of my pocket the odd occasion.

Both Catholic priests and nuns wear clothing symbolic to the Catholic Faith. We don’t have religious sanctions like Judaism and Islam do.

It was about the 4th Century that dress separation between clergy and laity occurred.
