What If Humanity Becomes Immortal?

I look forward to the day Jesus returns. I don’t know how much longer we can hold out without him. But what if we did hold out?

In a century, maybe two, physics may be completely solved. Quantum Theory and General Relativity will be reconciled. Gravity will be united with the other forces.

In such a world, it would be possible to engineer a machine container for all life, all knowledge and all conciousness. This machine could run on the vacuum energy alone… It could repair each proton as it decayed or replace it with a more stable particle. Such a mechanism would last forever.

Now, say we upload the entire human race into the mechanism. And just to be on the safe side, the mechanism duplicates itself and its contents millions of times. Each mechanism is sent into a different direction in space. This would mean that each individual person would be in a million places at once and would be immortal.

So then what? Will our church still have a function or even a meaning? Will we need a sequil to the New Testement? Will Jesus return to an empty Earth or will he go to the traveling machines? If each person has multiple minds does he also have multiple souls? OR… is it forbidden to think that far ahead?

even the best machines break down…forever is a loooooooooooong time

I think to base one’s faith on the possibilities of technology is to base it on a dream and not on reality.

For example, when we went to the Moon, the prognosticators were all predicting we would be on Mars within a few years with human habitations in a few more years following that. It never happened.

Why didn’t it happen? Because human beings aren’t that visionary nor are they interested in going to far off places so hostile to human life when they can be happy and bicker with each other right here on Earth.

We would have to be a much more organized world society for such a scenario to take place even if some scientist(s) were to develop the kind of technology you have described. We are just too cussedly selfish and partisan to get everyone thinking the same way and working for the same vision.

When Jesus returns he will find people pretty much as he left us–sinners with delusions of grandeur who can’t even rule ourselves let alone the universe.

God is still in charge and to think we can eventually outsmart him and conquer His domain is prideful and just not gonna happen.

Oh, I doubt that. What it took an infinite mind to create is not so easily conquerable by finite minds such as ours.

I saw this movie. Neo wins. The Matrix dies.

God’s Church always has function and meaning.

All revelation is complete in the person of Jesus. There is no new revelation.

Science fiction and theology are two different realms, you have them confused.

So this machine will be able to reverse entropy?
No. That would violate the First Law of Thermodynamics. What it will be able to do is tap into the vacuum energy of empty space. It will be able to feed on the particles and anti particles that sponaneously appear and then destroy each other. This energy source is inexhaustible.

An *inexhaustible * energy source that doesn’t violate the First Law of Thermodynamics?

Yes because the universe is not a closed system as once thought. Particle pairs appear in the vacuum because Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle dictates that the energy field cannot be precisely zero. Many cosmologists are convinced that the vacuum energy is causing the universe to accelerate its expansion. Many want to put the Cosmological Constant back into the Theory of Relativity.

Aw, c’mon Rich.

Britney Spears living forever has to violate some law of physics.

Please … 😛

perhaps before we generate anymore speculations in the realm of science fiction we should all go back to college and take some basic physics, chemistry and biology courses, since OP does not seem to differentiate between these branches of understanding the natural world.
