I am hoping someday to become in full communion with the church…I was baptized Rc, and found out in my twenties…I am now in my 40’s and started going to the RC church almost a year ago…Yes I started the RCIA…
My question is not to try to find excuses for masturbation…one of my addictions…because I know its keeps me separate from knowing God and pleasing Him.,
I just read a previous thread on masturbation where the definition from the Catechism was quoted "By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure.

My addiction to masturbation and porn started as a child…around the age of 8 or 9, after being sexually abused by a brother 7 yrs older…my parents never knew, until I was an adult. I used masturbation for different reasons…I never really used it for sexual pleasure, it was to escape…and to boost my depressed state…and/or accompany violent sexual fantasies and memories of abuse etc etc I know this is wrong, but if I were to confess, what kind of sin is it…I am assuming it would still be a mortal sin…but how culpable is someone, if its an addiction and not about lust…I know I am hurting myself and not loving myself…so I think it is a grave sin. By the way…I havent masturbated for at least 3 weeks…I lost track and I feel I will never go back…GOd being my helper.

Time to break out the CCC again.
2352 Bottom paragraph:
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.
In other words factors like an addiction it can lesson the moral culpability. However, such matters should be discused with a Priest to make sure that is the case. At any right the sinner still must strive to fight his/her addiction.

thanks…i think that helps…and I will continue fighting it

Our situations are somewhat similar (but I only have vague memories of abuse). Speak with your priest and tell him all the factors - not to make excuses but to get the facts straight. As was mentioned above, culpability may be less because of these factors. That is the case with my situation. It sounds like it may well be the case in your situation as well.

Keep fighting and seek spiritual direction. Christ’s peace and grace be with you.

Becoming a Catholic isn’t the easy road. But there are many graces and Sacraments that will help you in your journey to become more Christlike. God bless you for choosing the hard road.

Luke 9:23
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

Remember you don’t need to make God understand. He already does and He loves you more than you can ever know.

Talk over all the circumstances with the priest, so he knows what he’s absolving and so you understand it all thoroughly and can judge your actions if it ever happens again.

God bless you for all you’re doing.

The immediate physical stress relief qualities of masturbation are second to none. However, the relief is very short lived and due the calming effect of a powerful cocktail of brain chemicals that science is just now beginning to understand. By and large, it is not effective for long term stress management and one would do best to avoid it whenever possible. It’s also a sinful thing to do. Diving into the Word of God mixed with a little daily prayer is by far the best medicine for stress!
