Please help me. I want to make sure that I’m doing exactly the right thing.
I have a medical condition that can be treated with several months of chemotherapy. For obvious reasons, it would be a very bad idea to get pregnant for the duration of the treatment and for six months after treatment: a total of one year.
The doctor says that one of the conditions for receiving the treatment is that I have to agree to use two forms of birth control. My husband and I currently practice NFP. I told her that we don’t believe in birth control, but that we would abstain from sex. (We wouldn’t feel comfortable taking any chances at all, and the treatment would interfere with cycles and fertility signs, anyway.) She doesn’t seem to believe us. She seems to have a very negative view of NFP in general.
I am in the UK. I don’t have a choice about where I get my medical care. This is an NHS policy. I think we have to promise to use birth control.
I am not sure what to do. I have told her that we will abstain and that we can promise to never have unprotected sex. I think that this is not the same thing as promising to use condoms, but maybe I’m being disingenious. And, I’m not sure that she considers abstaining + condoms to equal two forms of birth control, anyway.
If we intend to abstain, anyway, can I accept Depo Provera injections and agree to buy condoms or something? Can I be on birth control if we’re not going to have sex, anyway?
