Continuing the discussion from Further to the Flat Earth discussion:
It’s called the Great Circle Route. I flew that a number of times from various cities in the U.S. to Tokyo. For the same reason, if you fly from Frankfurt or London to Washington, you’ll fly over Greenland.
In a flat earth scenario it would be feasible for a plane to fly over the North Pole, but not the South Pole.

I find the flat Earthers to be very er inventive in their answers. It’s fun to speculate, but it just ain’t real. The great circle route thing requires some invention as you’ve noted, and lots of interesting holes. The “radio” equivalent to to it is called DXing and has to do with the direction you aim your antenna to best receive a short wave station. Turns out that follows great circle, for very similar reasons as airplane flights. Since that operates from fixed point A to fixed point B, sometimes the path will take you over the north pole, and sometimes over the south pole.

There is a cool sci-fi story, by Christopher Priest, called Inverted World that deals with an approach to reality that is a non global earth.

More importantly, it isn’t truly important if they believe the earth is flat unless they take certain occupations.

I didn’t read all of the original thread. Does this version of flat earth conspiracy include the Antarctic ice wall, a navy blocking civilian access to it, and extra land “they” are hiding?

Anyone who genuinely thinks the Earth is flat is in urgent need of medical help.

Considering the number of websites with people not afraid to think outside the box,
In your opinion a lot of people are very ill 🤒

Thinking outside the box is one thing but believing the Earth is flat is simply stupid!! Only an idiot or someone who needs medical help would believe such nonsense!

You could check out ‘Flat Earth for Dummies’ on youtube.
So we have been programmed to believe in a giant globe, spinning around the sun, at breakneck speed, hurtling through space.
They did one simple demonstration of a law of physics. Spin a weight on a length of string, let go of the weight and it will fly straight - not in a circle.
If as we have been told, the earth is moving from east to west at 1000 miles per hour., and a plane leaves New York headed for LA, travelling at 500 mph. it would never arrive at LA as it would actually be moving backwards.
Flat earthers believe that the North Pole is the magnetic centre of our known universe, that celestial bodies revolve around the magnetic centre - North Pole.
Its better to think for yourself, using simple logic than letting NASA do your thinking for you.

I have. Good entertainment. I enjoy mental gymnastics. One of my favorite entertainments is to mentally work out various scenarios of what if…

I’ve seen flavors of this argument. It is almost a non sequitur because it abuses frames of reference.

Let’s try some simple algebra.

Let A=B
Then,
AA = AB . . . (multiply both sides by A)
AA-BB=AB-BB . . (Subtract b sq on both sides)
(A+B)(A-B)=B(A-B) . . (factor both sides)
A+B=B . . . (factor out common term)
Since A=B,
B+B=B
2B=B
Therefore,
2=1
QED

It looks like simple mathematics
Its math but it’s all relative. While at the airport the plane is moving with the ground at 1000 mph. With a few exceptions the air is also within 100 mph of ground speed. The plane then travels at 500 mph relative to the ground (technically the air) and can travel to LA.

Minor issue, I think the direction got reversed. The sun appears to go East to West from our pov therefore we’re told the earth spins West to east.

That reminds me of a puzzle .
Q. How is half a loaf of bread better than heaven ?
A.Half a loaf of bread is better than nothing and
Nothing is better than heaven Hence -
Half a loaf of bread is better than heaven !😇

Yep. By redefining things during the syllogism, you can get to all sorts of trouble.

I am still surprised by how many people have a hard time finding the logic error in that series of equations.

Gravity has never been proven. It must be accepted by faith, in order to adhere to the globe model. Gravity is something that we have taken for granted as truth since we were children ( because we were indoctrinated/brainwashed by the educational system) but, in reality this theory makes no sense whatever. Are we really to believe that there is a magic force called gravity that is so incomprehensively strong that it can pin entire oceans down to the earth, yet it cannot constrain the smallest cloud of smoke or even the tiniest winged insect ?, can make it rain upside down or cause crops to grow sideways all without us being aware of it ?
Those who promote the theory of gravity also say the earth is spinning at 1000 MPH , travelling round the sun at 67000 MPH and racing through the universe at 420000 MPH. Yet you do not feel even the slightest hint of movement.
Modern pseudo-science says " Disregard your Bibles, your senses, your reason , all repeatable, testable and observable data and blindly trust what you are told by your textbook.🗣️

We could go back and forth but to be honest our opinions on the shape of the earth has a limited impact in our daily lives.

Back to the OP, what changes if we were to accept a flat earth as opposed to a round earth? What is gained by those governments that claim the earth is round?

Its a bit like asking someone " Why do you wish to climb that mountain ? The usual answer is " Because its there " A lot of people have got together to share a common interest and learn more about the world we live in. I guess they’re not convinced by the spinning globe version.

I’ve been to the Worlds End and I can attest that we’re supported by several elephants who stand atop a cosmic Turtle 🐢

That’s a heck of a lot of turtle soup:) No more hunger in the world.
(And elephant jerky,)
