If one of the godparents is too sick to attend the baptism, can that person still be the godparent of record? That person will be the main “godparent” influence during the child’s upbringing. If a substitute steps in for the actual baptism, do that person have to be the godparent of record?

If a godparent is unable to attend the baptism for any reason (not just illness), a proxy can be appointed. The godparent remains the godparent of record and remains responsible for the subsequent duties of a godparent, but the proxy witnesses the baptism on the godparent’s behalf.
