Much of Jewish Law depends on the existence of the Temple. If for some reason the Jews were able to reclaim the whole of Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple…complete with the Holy of Holies and the Arc of the Covenant…how do you think Israel will turn out to be?

Would it become some sort of a Jewish Sharia state? Like Saudi Arabia? Would the stoning of Adulterers return? 🤷

I don’t think so. Judaism has morphed too much in the 1900 years of exile. Only fundamentalist Islam stones (literally) those caught in adultery.

…complete with … the Arc of the Covenant
They would have to be in possession of this article first wouldn’t they? Are they?

As far as all the other questions, I have wondered about it too but have nothing too positive to say about it. 🤷

People forget the First and Second Temples were basically glorified slaughterhouses. Pop-evangelicals seem to think cantatas and revivals went on there.

If a third Temple is built, according to the Bible it will be the Temple of Antichrist.

Well, technically, since the State of Israel controls Jerusalem, the temple mount is under Jewish Control. Now, obviously the big difficulty is that the every Islamic state in the world would turn on Israel if they were to tear down the Islamic Monuments there.

That being said, there is some evidence suggesting that a temple could be built on the site of the original temple without disturbing the Islamic holy sites.

If such a temple was built, I imagine Judaism would face a serious internal conversation about reviving the ritual sacrifice of animals there. While some might favor it, I suspect quite a few modern Jews would find the practice unacceptable. Even if the practice is revived, I suspect that most Jews would continue to live their lives the way they do now.

BTW, I think I object to the notion that the temples were simply glorified slaughterhouses. Yes, animals were sacrificed there, but it was according to God’s will. Jesus called the Temple his Father’s house; who are we to disagree!

Hi Bill,
There is emerging archaeological evidence that Herod’s temple was not where it was traditionally believed to be. The spot where those archaeologists think it was is not currently covered by a mosque. So a temple could conceivably be built there.

I don’t see any evidence that the Jews are interested in rebuilding the temple at this time. In the future - well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

God bless you,
Paul

With my limited understanding, the rebuilding of the Temple is the key to many offshoot Christian groups’ eschatology. It always struck me as an attempt to force God’s hand.

We were never big on stoning adulteres to begin with. Captial punishment was almost never executed when the Sanhedrin was in power.

So what can we expect when the temple is rebuilt?

And do jews want it rebuilt? I saw one jewish site which says that its the Messiah’s job to build it. What do you think?

Hmm… well, the Israeli state would never want to see it rebuilt. Why? Because the Israeli state is secular and politically center-left and rebuilding the temple would give way too much power to the radical right.

In 1967, when the Jews took the temple mount from Jordanian forces, some soldiers said something to the effect of “let’s blow up the dome of the rock!” and the commander in charge explicitly forbade it (see Avi Shlaim: The Iron Wall). Why? Because of the internal power struggle between radical and secular Jews.

Before 1967, Israel was kind of seen as a way of moving Jewish identity from a religious to national concept- it was socialist in tone and explicitly secular and a bit anti-religious… something that evangelicals seem to be a bit ignorant about when they pretend Israel is some kind of religious state out of the Bible. Ben Gurion said that God didn’t choose the Jews, the Jews chose God and it was all a bunch of stories. Look up Theodore Herzl and see what he wrote about “The New Hebrew vs. the Yid” (his own use of the slur, not mine).

Muslims consider the entire temple mount as sacred to Islam. I don’t think the Israelis would be able to build ANYTHING anywhere on it without prompting a jihad of massive proportions.

(And I doubt even one in a thousand jihadis would ever consider the irony of how their motivation would be much the same as the ancient christian crusaders they revile so much… 😉 )

some people are saying that the original temple doesnt cover the land were the Dome is built on. so what if the jews builds the temple right beside it? 🤷

The reason Muslims consider the land where the Temple was as being sacred in Islam…

is because that’s where the Temple was.

It is called a place of prostration before there was ever a mosque there–and that’s why Muslims built the masjid al-Aqsa there. That is the mosque–masjid al-Aqsa. It was called a “masjid” (place of prostration) because it’s where the Children of Isreal worshiped God.

The Dome of the Rock has a different significance–a lesser one, I think–that from there the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Some people believe it’s where Abraham was about to sacrifice his son. But it isn’t the major thing–Masjid al-Aqsa is the big deal. People only think of the Dome because it’s pretty and gets in all the pictures about Jerusalem.

I, for my own part, don’t understand all the dispute. I really believe that the lives of the people are more important than buildings.

The Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa mosque are structures built on the temple mount. The temple mount itself is huge and there is little doubt that the Herodian temple was on it somewhere: it IS the original temple mount, not a reconstruction.

Regardless if great pains were taken to preserve the Dome and Al Aqsa, muslims would go berserk in reaction to a religious Jewish construction project ANYWHERE on the mount.

Right.

Possibly. I still think that’s minor compared to the Jewish ‘construction projects’ all over the West Bank that are actually illegal according to international law.

Muslims probably would go bersek though… I just think that would be pretty stupid.

you of all people should understand how religion is most important to some people.

There are too many unknowns for an answer to be possible.

The only people - AFAIK - who favour the execution of adulterers are Christian Reconstructionists  - see this:
A quotation:
  • If they gained control of the US or Canadian federal government, there would be many changes:
The use of the death penalty would be greatly expanded, when the Hebrew Scriptures’ laws are reapplied. People will be executed for adultery, blasphemy, heresy, homosexual behavior, idolatry, prostitution, evil sorcery (some translations say Witchcraft), etc. The Bible requires those found guilty of these “crimes” to be either stoned to death or burned alive. Reconstructionists are divided on the execution method to be used.
  • A church or congregation which does not accept the Mosaic Law has another god before them, and is thus guilty of idolatry. That would be punishable by death. That would include all non-Christian religious organizations. At the present time, non-Christians total two-thirds of the human race.
  • The status of women would be reduced to almost that of a slave as described in the Hebrew Scriptures. A woman would initially be considered the property of her father; after marriage, she would be considered the property of her husband.
  • It would be logical to assume that the institution of slavery would be reintroduced, and regulated according to Biblical laws. Fathers could sell their daughters into slavery. Female slaves would retain that status for life. Slave owners would be allowed to physically abuse them, as long as the slaves lived for at least a day before dying of the beating.
  • Polygyny and the keeping of concubines were permitted in the Old Testament. However, Reconstructionists generally believe in marriage between one man and one woman only. Any other sexual expression would be a capital crime. Those found guilty of engaging in same-sex, pre-marital or extra-marital sex would be executed.
If that’s Christianity, then thank God for atheism  🙂

LOL - someone has taken a liking to Arab propaganda methinks…
I can also claim that there is “emerging archaeological evidence” that the Nazca drawings were alien landing strips, but then I should not expect to be taken seriously…

No matter how many times a lie is repeated, it will NOT turn into truth…

I saw it on the National Geographic Channel on that show called “The Naked Archaeologist”. That guy (a Caucasian American, not an Arab) is a little out there, but he has made some significant discoveries, recognized by his peers.

And there’s no call to be insulting.
