Hi everyone. What should you do if you have committed a grave sin that’s not listed in the Catechism? Should you still confess it or just leave it be?

You need to confess mortal sins. For a sin to be mortal there are three conditions. It must be grave, you must fully consent, and you must have had sufficient/full knowledge. Just being grave matter is not enough.

I’m figuring you know the sin is grave because it is listed in a reliable list for examining your conscience? If so, you ought to confess it if it was mortal. It does not matter if the CCC mentions what you did using words you recognize. What does matter is that it was mortal. Usually most sins can be classed under one of the 10 commandments. Perhaps what has happened is that the CCC uses a word for what you have done that you don’t recognize?

I think Pug has given a very good answer. I cannot imagine a sin that is not covered in the CCC as the foundation for sins are found in the 10 Commandments, and those are covered in the CCC.

I don’t know. I suppose that could be the case. But thank you, I will be confessing this sin at my next confession.

Remember, you can always ask the priest while you are there at confession. He can help explain if it was grave or not. 🙂 I know, most people are nervous then, so it might be hard to ask, but I think he could be helpful.

You shouldn’t be afraid of confessing anything to a priest, they have heard it all…They WANT people to confess the grave sins, they are happy when people do it, so they can mediate and ask for God’s forgiveness for you, they aren’t there to judge you.

There have been numerous times when I have said to the priest in the confessional: " … I’m not sure about the sinfulness of this, but … "

The priest is not there to bring God’s wrath upon us but to bring His mercy to us.

The Catechism does not carry the complete list of sins that we could possibly commit. It is a guide. If you believe your action to have been of a serious nature and willfully done then by all means go to confession.

This is the first time that I’ve heard the Catholic Church accused of not itemizing enough sins. 🙂

Tell the priest what happened and he’ll take it from there.

I was thinking the same thing…
I had a confessor that was awesome… he would ask how or why you thought the offense was sinful… which usually dredged up the real sin… like if you were discussing another employee to your boss and you felt is was sinful in some way… he would ask why… and it would come down to something totally different like you felt you were looking for things to discuss to make it look like you were doing your job… pride and gossiping (as opposed to just gossiping)… hmmmm… so now by not prayerfully discerning before the meeting, I am sinning. The cool thing was that he was right and even my boss asked me to pray about the situation… did I mention I have a Very Catholic boss???

The Catechism is very amiguous as to what constitutes “grave sin.” Confess it anyway. Ask the advise of a holy and orthodox priest. Get a good booklet with thorough examination of conscience. God Bless.

You mean you committed an “Original” Sin?😃

Confess, do your penance, and don’t do it again.👍

??? The Catechism doesn’t really list sins.
