What if your parish went to communion by intinction only? (Assuming that there was some catechesis about what it is and how it is properly done.)

How would the AVERAGE parishioner accept intinction?

Catholic Answers forumites are not average parishioners…so I’m asking how you think that the AVERAGE person at your parish would accept intinction.

Uh, Dude. You gotta define your terms. What the heck is intinction? Sorry if I’m the ignoramus here, but I’ve never heard the word before.

Intinction is the dipping of the consecrated host in the Precious Blood. It is a standard practice in the Byzantine Church and an acceptable method in the Latin Church.

Intinction is governed by two basic rules:
  1. It is to be received on the tongue ONLY (not in the hand); and
  2. Self-intinction (dipping the Host yourself) is not permitted.
I can’t speak for other parishioners, but where I come from, if intinction is offered, people receive on the tongue only.

Dude. You gotta define your terms. What is the average parishioner?

This poll isn’t really answerable without proper research and methodology. Otherwise, it just calls for speculation and is not a worthwhile poll.

Do you think other polls here are scientific??? 😉

AVERAGE CATHOLIC PARISHIONER:

5’ 4" female, watches Grey’s Anatomy, loves sunsets, walks on the beach, schmaltzy movies, doesn’t think birth control is a mortal sin, 40 pounds overweight, loves chocolate. 😉

Nope. The difference is that this one asks for speculation of the AVERAGE (not my caps) parishioner, which is something not answerable by the folks here.

But you’re right. These forums abound with bad polls throughout.

Your data?

in this method receiving on the tongue is the only option, so I don’t get this statement.

I would welcome it, it seems to address all the issues and potential issues that have arisen with the practice of reception in the hand, and would be definition eliminate EMHCs during Mass which would have to be greeted with shouts of joy. If the parish is going to purchase the proper vessels for this practice and modify slightly they way the procession is managed, where the priest or deacon stand etc, and with proper catechesis for the faithful, yes go for it.

how would the “average” parishioner react? about as well as the do to any of the other changes that are introduced every couple of years, apparently without any rhyme, reason, catechesis or other explanation–they would assume it is some personal quirk of the pastor and just go along with it, and sigh when they get to another parish where “we don’t do it that way.”

I refuse to participate in useless polls which ask questions that cannot be addressed in this way.

The paten is used. In the Orthodox Church they use a cloth that they hold up to their neck. Perhaps in Catholic churches they do that too.

I can’t speak for the average parishioner. I just know I’d love it!

In the US a parish would not be permitted to do this because the US Bishops have permitted reception in the hand as an option to be chosen by the faithful. Now it would be possible to offer Holy Communion with the Host only in the hand or intinction and reception on the tongue. But a parish could not force a person to receive by intinction only.

There is an elderly retired priest who helps out at our four parishes. He offers Communion by intinction at every weekday Mass he celebrates. Everybody knows the drill: if you want to receive the consecrated Host only, you extend your hands. If you want to receive under both forms (by intinction), you extend your tongue. The paten must be used with intinction, and you must receive on the tongue.

I can’t answer for the “average” Catholic parishioner as every parish I’ve attended is different. For myself, I would totally go for it. I already receive on my tongue (which took practice as I grew up in the 80s and 90s and we were all taught to receive only in the hand), so this would not be a problem for me.

For my friends who are practicing Catholics and my Catholic family members, I think they would be for it, as they do not like drinking from the chalice and have many times said they would prefer intinction.

Actually, my old parish used intinction for a number of years prior to building the new church due to the lack of space to have EMHCs with both species. At that time-- back 5 or more years ago-- the EMHCs also gave out Communion in this manner. We had special ciboriums that had a little cup that inserted into them, and the priest and EMHCs all used them. That was before the newest GIRM, so that may have revised who can do intinction-- not sure.

Anyway, it did not eliminate receiving in the hand either. If you approached with your hands up, you received the host only. If you approached with your hands folded in prayer, you received both species on the tongue through intinction.

What Annie said. The one parish I have been to where they did use intinction had a very reverant Mass. I hear that they now offer a regular EF Mass.
