The Baptist sect materialized almost 1,600 years after the establishment of the New Covenant and you don’t find that of any concern?
No, because I reject the assertion.

The first part about Mary is a repeat and I have already commented on it.
No its not true, we believe in confession but not to a priest. We confess directly to God.

I was raised Catholic and converted to Baptist. I feel God at my church more than I did as a Catholic. I went through, infant baptism, confession, first communion, confermation. I was a altar boy and went to seminary to be a priest, that is when I left the Church, I disagreed with some of the teachings of the Church. I love being a Baptist just like you love being Catholic. If you like the CC then by all means stay, If you feel God there the stay, If you believe in their teachings stay. I will never tell you to leave your church or your beliefs.

As you go through other posts you will see that I disagree with some of the teachings of the CC and will get my point or beliefs accross. You will see that there are those who will say less then nice things about my beliefs and some about me because I don’t believe in the ways or some of the teachings of the CC. Don’t take it as being anti-Catholic or anything because I’m not. I respect the CC as well as all good Church’s that believe in God. We all love, follow and worship the same God, just in a different way.

I hope I answered your questions. Remember asking questions is how we learn and how we learn is by asking questions. I’m glad to see a 15 year old so dedicated to God. I pray that there are more like you out there.
God bless
Rev Kevin
Rev God Bless you in your answers. Very well put.👍

It is not an “assertion,” it is a historical fact.

Are you suggesting that the Baptist sect *was not *established by a man named John Smyth in approximately 1609 in Amsterdam? Do the history books lie? Have I simply over-looked the First Baptist Church of Constantinople in my study of history? Please enlighten me.

I don’t have the space to type a historical essay on the development of credobaptism, paedobaptism, et al. I am sure the web is full of them, however 🙂

Now, Fantom, that sounds like a dodge. :tsktsk:

I do love the Baptist faith, but never converted for just the reasons above. It would nag me to no end to wonder if it was original or contrived. And the fact that it is so comfortable and easy would really be a red flag to me.

So is the Baptist Church the true Church, or isn’t it?

With the exception of you and a few others, bro, it’s been anything but charitable.

But of course, we’re the “anti-Catholics.” lol 🙂
Are you aware the Southern Baptist Convention was formed prior to the civil war because to many southern baptist preachers had their own slaves and refused to give them up!
Sounds like something to be proud of if your a southern baptist does it not.

Matthew

No, it isn’t a dodge at all. It may appear that way, because honestly, any historical survey like that is not going to be something that would make sense to try and work out on an internet forum. I would be happy to provide websites, books, etc. that discuss an overview of Baptist history. However, I am not going to be able to fit all of it into a post with a 6000 word limit! The most that one could do is limit it to a discussion of paedo vs. credo baptism.

Yes, I believe the practice of credobaptism was the practice of the apostolic church, so in that sense, I believe we have the correct, biblical doctrine,

I went through Southern Baptist schools, but I do not belong to the SBC. However, if I did, it surely would be something I wouldn’t be proud of. There is plenty of that to go around in general, though. We don’t base our doctrinal positions on the purity of our historicity, however.

Asking what a Baptist Church is like isn’t very different from asking what a motor vehicle is like. There are Honda Civics and tractor-trailers. There are Euclid 100-ton dump trucks and little Smart Cars. There are a zillion flavors of Baptist so that question really can’t be answered.

The interesting question is how a Baptist knows his/her “flavor” is hermeneutically and dogmatically correct?

All based on personal interpretation of course along with tens of thousands of other denominations that state they are right and you are wrong. What makes you right and the others wrong…?

Out of curiosity, do you believe that the Real Presence was part of the early practice of the church?

I would imagine the answer to that would be the same method that anyone else uses to determine whether their hermeneutics and dogma are correct. Scripture, reason, history, etc.

How do you know that your private interpretation of Roman documents is correct over against the private interpretation of other Roman Catholics?

Both sides can play such epistemological gymnastics. But it doesn’t really solve much, does it?

Early, I suppose would be relative. It is certainly something that begins to develop in force in the PN era.

kinda funny how all of us former baptist keep ending up in the Catholic Church. and former Catholics keep going to the baptist. wonder if its a zero sum game? 😃 kinda like people from michigan keep moving down to texas, and texans keep moving to michigan. location location location… peace to all 🙂
Not so much a zero sum game…as more of a different path…same journey.😃

But FantomScholar, when a Calvinist and an Arminian armwrestle, who is correct and where does one go to confirm the victory? We know that there are Calvinist Baptists and Arminian Baptists. There are dispensationalists, antinomians, etc., etc. Where is the truth?

Yes (of course, that’s not to say it wasn’t present before that. It starts to develop into distinct theological language then)
So if it was present, why do the Baptists reject the concept of the Real Presence? I’ve never understood that.

Scripture. One must begin with the proper understanding that any dogmatic issue can be resolved using the text of Scripture. That then raises the question of who is using Scripture properly. Taking the example of the Arminian, one must look at whether the way he uses Scripture is grammatically correct, consistent with itself, etc. The same goes for the antinomian. Can either side use various passages of Scripture to support their views? Absolutely. So could an Arian, a Monophysite, etc. But could any of them use those passages consistently with other passages of Scripture? I don’t believe so.
