Correct; So how do you, as an individual Christian, tell the difference?
I myself do not make that determination. That is where I place my faith and trust on the church. Precisely why Catholics,Orthodoxs,Coptics and all the ancient liturgical churches believe Christ gave the 12 and their successors and the church the authroity and Holy Spirit to guide into all truths.

BTW: Do not misunderstand me,I do believe Scripture is important, since ALL doctrines derive from Scripture and under Apostolic Traditions.

False premise. No where does wirtten scripture claim exclusive authority. It was THE CHURCH who defended the correct interpretation. Show me where scripture explicitly defined the Trinity? No where! It was the church using scripture implicitly to defend and define the doctrine of the Trinity.
No one has made the claim that Scripture represents the exclusive authority. It is, however, the only infallible one that the Church currently possesses. The problem with the doctrinal differences you cite is Scriptural interpretation, not Scripture itself. It was also 2/3rds of the “the church” that sided with the Arians.
Precisely! The fact that Arian was a bishop did not mean he had exclusive infallibilities. He followed his own heterdoxy, which was completely false. The Church decides and defines doctrines as a CHURCH,not as individuals.
So…2/3rds of the church sided against Athanasius. Athanasius contra mundum, correct? So was Arius right as an individual, or did he have to get the (name removed by moderator)ut of the rest of the bishops who opposed him, i.e. the church?

If you were alive in 350 A.D., and you placed your trust in the church, you would be placing your trust in the hands of Arians. How would you have been able to tell the difference between the two camps? It does no good to say the church is infallible, if you must fallibly determine which teaching currently in vogue in the church is the infallible one.

Are you sure that Arius was a bishop? I recall him being referred to as a presbyter (a priest) from Alexandria.
*Arius (AD 250 or 256 – 336) was a Christian presbyter from Alexandria, Egypt. * [Wikipedia]]
My mistake!

I disagree. The church IS infallible, not it could-be or might-be when it suits it. Using your argument would mean EVERY orthodox doctrine would be flawed or riddled with errors, including the canon of scripture.

No different today. Exactly why there exists thousands of different churches, each claiming the other is wrong. Again, the Holy Spirit cannot be responsible for thousands of different ‘truths’ or doctrines.

Either Christ left ONE visible church guided by the HS or he did not. Cannot be an either/or dichotomoy.

No one has made the claim that Scripture represents the exclusive authority.

Maybe not you or your particular congregation, but not according to Sola Scriptura advocates.

** It is, however, the only infallible one that the Church currently possesses. **

Not true! The church Christ founded IS also infallbile. How could Jesus found a fallible church? God allowing a fallible church to formulate and define doctrines? Then orthodoxy would all be a sham or pipe dream.

The problem with the doctrinal differences you cite is Scriptural interpretation, not Scripture itself. It was also 2/3rds of the “the church” that sided with the Arians.

Exactly! The correct interpretation triumphed because Christ Church as promised would be guided into all truths by the Holy Spirit. Again, the fact the majority were Arians did not equate into defeat for Orthodoxy.

And how many bishops at Nicaea favored his position?

Prayer, study and Apostolic Authority in communion with the man Christ place in charge together with the other bishops of the Church. The scripture warns us against isolating ourselves from interpreting on our own. It does not however tell us not to study scripture or not to learn the truth. In fact, it’s the opposite. To bad far to many Christians don’t study God’s word because when we study God’s word, consisting of Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, we come to learn truth. The Holy Spirit leads us, so long as we do not become the reiegade heretic that chooses to do what ever his heart wishes in order to live the life style he chooses rather than obeying God. How do we know? We following the teachings of the Church as passed down through Apostolic succession. etc. etc.

I have many Southern Baptist family as well as Church of Christ family and friends. I know what they teach and you need to do more ancient church study friend to realize how ridiculous some of the things you say here. It is true that in the early church Arianism was widespread. It caused many fights and deaths. It was the Catholic Saints that steered the Church in the right direction together with Christians that desired truth.

LOL Julianna… We serve liquor at ours. Which makes any visiting Baptists not a part of our church angry on the outside, and on the inside wondering how they can sneak in without anyone noticing,
My Baptist grandmother in Charleston would be rolling over in her grave…say it ain’t so! 😃

When we got married, we asked the priest about the reception as we had Baptist family members…he said “Have a Catholic punch and a Baptist punch…then sit back and notice which one you are replenishing more often…”. 😃

I grew up in Massachusetts and moved to SC in my teen years. Went to a Baptist wedding reception and asked “When is the band getting here…let’s rock and roll”…and they looked at me funny…🤷

LOL Julianna…yeah. It seems it is mostly the Southern Baptists and the independent fundamentalist Baptists who are opposed to alcohol. It’s a distinctly American phenomenon, arising out of the pietist movements in the late 19th century. Baptists traditionally never had an issue with liquor. Most Baptists would be shocked to see the eminent Charles Spurgeon photos of him with a glass of scotch and a cigar,

Simple question, Nicea. How do you know it’s infallible?

Non-Baptists can get to heaven, though it may be a bit more difficult.😉

…Scripture…It is, however, the only infallible one that the Church currently possesses.

Answersplease:
How can you tell what is infallible scripture and what is not?

If the Church founded by Christ is not infallible, then how can you trust them about the canon?

So You dont pray prayers? at all? i love being catholic 🙂 a lot of my relatives are baptist But, i’ve never went to a baptist church with them I’ll Go to mass is it a sin to say No? because i’m catholic i’ve said no before but i’ll never say no to go to Mass though i dont know

they’ve asked me before i’ve said no before because i’m not baptist did i sin??? i’m just wondering

I wasn’t thinking of you. I had #13, 16, 17, and 18 in mind 🙂

I realize, of course, that polemics and straightforward rebuttals of doctrinal positions can be helpful and used to clarify where each respective party sits on any given topic. I am by no means a doctrinal relativist and clearly believe Rome to be incorrect on any number of issues. The denominational grandstanding that is evident, however, is distasteful to say the least. Given the OP is asking about the nature of Baptist churches, it’s a been funny that so far it’s been nothing but a boastful few responses from Catholics on the subject.

Hopefully your grandparents and MIL let you stick around for the casseroles after church 🙂
phew! for a moment i thought it was me.😉 i do come down pretty hard on fundamentalist from time to time. i wont deny it. but i do have two baptist on my friends list. rev kev is one. shall i make it a third? peace 🙂

Baptists DO pray of course, but their prayers are directed ONLY to God / Jesus / The Holy Spirit. They would never say a Hail Mary or a prayer involving a saint. They do not believe in intercessionary prayer involving the dead.

It is not a sin to attend a Baptist service, but it NEVER replaces your Sunday obligation to go to Mass. You should also be careful because the interpretations of the Bible you receive in their sermon will likely be different, and possibly incompatible, with Catholic teaching.

It is also forbidden to participate in the Communion service of any other denomination (the Orthodox being the big exception, except they won’t let us receive anyway, so it doesn’t matter normally). To participate in their Communion implies a unity that does not exist. It also implies that you believe everything that they teach. Remember, for Catholics, Communion is ALSO a rite of initiation into our church!

Simple question, Nicea. How do you know it’s infallible?
Three sources teach us that the Church is infallible;
    • Scripture. Scripture tells us that the Church will be guided into all truth, will decide what sins are not retained and what sins are retained knowing that those decisions will be reflected in heaven, will teach all nations (see John 16:13, Matthew 18:18, John 20:19-23, Matthew 28:19-20).
    • The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been given to the Church and He teaches and guides her leading her into the truth (John 14:16-17, John 16:13)
    • The Church herself. The Church herself testifies to her own calling to infallibly teach the truth of Christ by
    • her origin - founded by Christ through the 12 apostles that He chose,
    • an unbroken line of succession - from Christ through the 12 apostles to the bishops (overseers/pastors) that they appointed and who in their turn appointed their successors through history to today,
    • Tradition - the preservation of Christ’s teaching in sacred Scripture and in sacred Tradition,
    • The continuing presence and teaching of the Holy Spirit - He makes Himself know through the Church and the teaching of the Church (see Mark 16:15-18, Luke 24:44-49, Matthew 28:18-20, John 20:21-23, Acts 2:2-4 and so forth)

I think the Church’s teaching is that the Pope is infallible in matters of faith and morals when speaking ex-Cathedra.

You ask a good question about the authority of the Church if say a majority of Bishops were to be against the Pope or a Church council.

I would imagine that technically the Bishops would be considered heretical and would then be considered invalid Bishops

Thanks, i will have to look up the state of the Church at the time of the Arian heresy. (From a Catholic viewpoint. 🙂 )
