Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me what a brown scapular is ? Can men where them aswell ?

Chuck:

I would recommend that you google: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Brown Scapular.

The results of the search will tell you EVERYthing that you want or need to know about this wonderful gift from Our Lady.

In short the Brown Scapular was given to St. Simon Stock by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel as a sign of her love and protection. Anyone can wear the Brown Scapular, but they should be invested in the Scapular by a priest.

I Looked it up but is a scalper one specific design or are the different designs ? Like foes it matter what one you get kinda thing ?

What is important is the color.

Besides the Brown Scapular there are other scapulars, the green and the blue and the red of the Passion of Our Lord and the Sacred Hearts and probably other colors as well. The small white scapular, provided with the blue and red cross, is the badge of the members of the Confraternity of The Most Blessed Trinity. Each is representative of different devotion. There is even the five fold scapular made up of the five most popular scapulars in the Catholic Church: the Brown Scapular, the Blue Scapular, the Black Scapular, the Red Scapular, and the White Scapular.

One wears a scapular as a means of practicing a devotion. So if you have a particularly deep affection for worshipping God in the Trinity, you might want to wear a white scapular. If your devotion is strongly focussed on the Immaculate Conception you might choose to wear the blue scapular. I am in formation with the Secular Carmelites so I have recently received the large brown scapular which is in effect my “habit” within the secular order.

I found a brown one called crusader With a yellow orange colour cross that I like so what would that mean , what do you mean by “habit” .

The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the miniature habit of the Carmelite order. I have one exactly as you described above. Some are Brown 'Scapulars that have pictures on them.

Here is an authentic Carmelite site that will give you an updated explanation of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel presented by the two orders of Carmel.

The Carmelite habit worn by priests and nuns has two long panels of brown material, attached at the shoulders. Lay persons that want to identify with the spirituality of Carmel wear the miniature habit.

The Brown Scapular was given to a man directly, so yes, men are encouraged to wear them. Women where them as well though.

men or women can wear them…

it’s like a miniature habit, as another poster said, that identifies you with Carmel… you should be enrolled by a priest to wear it, it’s just a simple ceremony. The priest will tell you what you should do after… for example, there are certain conditions: if you’re enrolled you should pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, but a priest can give permission for you to just pray the Rosary instead. THen you should live chastely according to your state of life. The scapular is not a superstitious thing but since it’s associated with Mary, it’s like a sign of consecration to her and she obtains many graces to help you. Mary also promised, that if you die wearing your scapular you’ll go to Heaven: this is NOT meant to replace the Sacraments, - if a person is unrepentant, they usually lose their Scapular somehow right before they die… (in some cases, it even begins to burn them). So it’s not like a supersitious object, but it’s very powerful. Our Lady of Fatima said to wear the Scapular, I believe. I wear one and it’s really helped me. I recommend it! and I also recommend being enrolled by a traditional priest (who’s in communion with Rome) cause then he’ll use the traditional prayer and maybe in Latin, and will probably bless your scapular with holy water that’s been blessed using the traditional blessing that includes an exorcism 👍

God bless!

Basically, the only thing required for an authentic Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is two pieces of brown fabric, one to hang in the front, and one in the back, attached to the pieces of fabric by strings. Usually you see the scapulars in the stores or online embellished with pictures of Our Lady, or a saint. That is fine, but not necessary.

Just because the crusades had some bad things happen doesn’t mean the scapular called a crusader style scapular is bad. Think of it as being a prayer crusader for our Lord and His Blessed Mother.

scapulars are usually worn underneath clothing, sort of like a necklace but more on your shoulders than close to the neck. One part of the scapular is on your back, the other on the front. Regarding crusades, they’re not bad, some things happened there that were bad, but crusades themselves - nothing to worry about. I don’t know what the crusader scapular is. Here is how they usually look like and I got my scapular from this website: rosescapular.net/MtCarmel-Brown-Scapulars_c2.htm

God bless!

Here is Mel Gibson wearing a scapular. Usually, most people won’t know you’re wearing one unless you don’t have a shirt on.

There are many different varieties I’ve seen. Some have little St. Benedict medals and/or cricifixes attached - I don’t like that. I’ve bought from a few different places but found that the Sisters of Carmel make ones that hold up well - albeit a little pricier than many others you can find. You can see pictures at that link. Some may say they don’t need to be wool anymore but I prefer the old school.

I got my first brown scapular from my grandparents when I became an altar boy. I think I may have been enrolled but never wore it - it wasn’t cool back then.

Several years ago, as part of my ongoing conversion process, I came across that same scapular given to me by my grandmother and started wearing it again. A couple years after that, I spoke to a traditional priest about becoming officially enrolled since I could not remember if it had been done properly. He gladly enrolled me (again?) - it only takes a couple of minutes. Make sure to ask them to relieve you of the necessity of praying the Little Office of Our Blessed Mother and just praying a daily Rosary instead - unless you want to pray the office daily.

Nota bene: The first scapular must be blessed, which the priest will do, but subsequent replacements are not required to be blessed.

You can find some good information here too.

Pax,

Michael

Thanks for this link. I have the booklet but it’s nice to have an online option to cut and paste from.

Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me what a brown scapular is ?
The Brown scapular is the habit of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary upon Mt. Carmel; that is, it is the same material that She wears whilst walking in the Garden of God.

It is certainly most appropriate for men to wear. Although terribly unfaithful, we are to give Mary our whole-heart.

If you don’t mind: One should carry a Rosary in his left pocket at all times and wear a scapular, especially if he is away from the house. I find that when I am working I will often carry it in my right pocket, since I have a physically demanding job.
