Can anybody be a catechist or do they have to be ordained?

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place.

Prior to Vatican II the main Catechists at a Parish level were priests, religious brothers or nuns. However, increasingly the role of the Parish Catechist has been undertaken by Catholic Laity.

Catechists are often deployed to teach Candidates who are preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

thats what i would like to do, in september i will be doing the Catholic certificate of religious studies, my further studies will continue from there, talk to your parish priest

A catechist is one who catechizes. 😉

The role of catechist is not just for the ordained. However, the bishop does have the primary responsibility for catechesis for his particular Church. And his priests are his collaborators in this effort. But the laity also participate. Indeed, we must. The priest cannot do everything himself.

If you want to read all about it (:)), you might take a look at the General Directory for Catechesis. It explains it all.

Parents are the primary & first educators of their children in the faith.
The church in her wisdom has called people to help them in catechesis.
There are many areas to work in: with children, youth, young adults, adults, RCIA, etc. Catechesis is a lifelong process. We can never know all there is to know about the faith.
Those who wish to help in this, sometimes begin my volunteering as a classroom aide in Sunday school. If they care to pursue it further, it is helpful to attend classes on the process and various topics within Religious ed. you can find most all of these courses for free (or for a small fee) within your Diocese. There are also large, dedicated certification programs all over the place. At parishes, the Chancery, and online.
Fascinating and so rewarding.
God bless you!

Great answer! I was especially pleased to see you pointed out parents first and foremost.

As a “certified” catechism who must attend several hours of training annually to be given the honor and responsibility to serve my brothers and sisters, my parish, and God, none of this is as importance and effective as the role of parents as catechisms for their children!
