I recently got back in touch with an old friend and we got to talking. I shared that I was using NFP and she said that she was a Charismatic Catholic not a Roman Catholic. What is the difference?

Charismatic Catholics are those who are typically in the Roman Catholic Church (maybe your friend is not; if she is in communion with Rome, then I am rather perplexed by her response) yet espouse practices like those of Pentecostals, such as glossalia and prayer-meetings (and some priests celebrate Mass in a Charismatic style). At the same time, they adhere to Catholic doctrine and often have devotions to Mary and the saints.

I’m a little perplexed too (like Young Thinker) because your mention of using NFP triggered her response. If she adheres to Catholic Doctrine, wouldn’t she agree with using NFP?

That’s what I thought, that she would agree with NFP, hence the question, I have never heard of a Charismatic Catholic, and I still don’t understand what Charismatic means. I mean I know what Charisma is but it just doesn’t make sense to me, so I am perplexed as well. 🤷

This explanation from Wikipedia explains it adequataly.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal"is a movement within the Catholic Church. Worship is characterized by vibrant Masses, as well as prayer meetings featuring prophecy, healing and “praying in tongues.” This movement is based on the belief that certain charismata (a Greek word for gifts), bestowed by the Holy Spirit, such as the abilities to pray in tongues and to heal (which Christians generally believe existed in the early Church as described in the Bible) should still be practiced today"

It appears that your friend is misinformed about the Charismatic movement within the Catholic Church.

Her being misinformed wouldn’t surprise me. Unfortunately.
