Obviously from one of my previous post, I don’t understand what its meant as a Traditional Catholic? I am conservative person. I am also so happy but the Grace of God I was born Catholic. Please explain friends. I have no idea, honestly. 😊

The most succinct description I can think of is: A traditional Catholic is a Catholic who approaches his Catholic faith as he were living at some time before Vatican II.

The main definition that is operation here at CAF is a preference for the Extraordinary form of the Mass.

It depends. Some people use it the way that wasserful explained, some people use it to cover a much wider group of people. The word traditionalist, however, is also used to cover the group that Wasserful described and this is never used to describe other Catholics. I hope that helps! 🙂

I would qualify this by noting that there are a bunch of people who use traditional in a broader sense, although it is usually used to mean this. While the term ‘traditionalist’ is also used to describe this same group of people and is never used in a broader sense.

So can a person like me who is only 33 and has only known the VII, be a Traditional Catholic?

It’s the mass in Latin and was the mass that all Western Catholics used prior to Vatican II.
Correction, it is a form of the Latin Rite that is always said in Latin. The OF can also be said in Latin. The difference between the two forms is not essentially one of language.

Here is a link that puts the two forms side by side in English

lms.org.uk/resources/comparison-between-the-traditional-and-novus-ordo-missals

I would note that the English translation of the OF (the Mass you go to) is not the new translation.

the 1962 missal is the extraordinary form. the older usually Latin mass. after 62 it’s called"ordinary"(normal)

also called Tridentine.

I guess its all a matter of context…could argue that all “traditional catholics” died off, nearly 2000 years ago.

A couple of other tems I personally find annoying are “cradle catholics” and “converts”.

I like to step out on a rope here. I feel I can be proud to be Catholic. I was Born Catholic. I like to say “I was born Catholic by the Grace of God” 😃

I am a Traditional Catholic. I don’t attend the Latin mass because there isn’t one here, and I know there are other traditional Catholics who are unable to attend the Latin Mass and so attend the Ordinary form of the Mass. There are many traditional Catholics in the parish I attend.

Though, I believe attending the Latin Mass is the biggest identifier, there are other identifiers also.

A traditional Catholic is someone that sees the traditions of the Church that have been handed down through the ages and passed on from our fathers as necessary in our relationship with God. It is a lifestyle. It is a relationship with the Lord. It is holding onto all His Church has taught through out its history, not accepting the mindset that a new church evolved after Vatican II. Rejecting modernism.

Well, at least that is what it is for me and I guess IMHO is what being Catholic is all about, following all the of the Church.

There is only one Catholic Church by definition. The categorizations are divisive. Catholics shouldn’t seek division, but rather unity (comm-union).
So, what do you have in common with “liberal persons”?

I am just wondering what the definition is? It just seem to me, at my parish, that we have alot of uneducated Catholics regarding our faith. I don’t know why they have time to busy themselves with actives of their enjoyment but never have any time to join bible studies and Catholicism classes. Thats all. Not politically. Scripturally.

Some would say not accepting Vatican ii is heresy? And wouldn’t some traditional Catholics say that is wrong?

I like your response. In the parish I attend, there are many who are very serious about following the traditions of the church but I’ve never heard anyportion of the mass spoken in Latin. Mass is often spoken in Spanish/English due to the large number of Spanish speakers who attend. There is a strong emphasis on faithfulness to our Lord and the church however, so I consider our parish a traditional Roman Catholic church.

Hi JillianRose - as you can see some folks have strong feelings about this topic!

I’m someone who left the Church for over 20 yrs. and have now been back about 10.
I’ve defined traditional Catholics as those who support the teachings of the Church and the Magisterium and the Pope. I know there is a lot of unhappiness on the part of some folks about Vatican II, and believe me I understand some of it for reasons that would take another page to explain. But when it boils down to it I think IF you are Catholic, and you want to be Catholic you should either chose to agree with Church teaching and authority or why stay in the Church? So I would consider a “cafeteria Catholic” - either liberal (i.e. along the lines of some Catholic politicians), OR conservative folks, who take what they want only, and ignore, disobey, or even mock the rest of Church doctrine or teaching. To me that is not traditional Catholic. And yes, sadly, that can seem to be a lot of folks.

My family has been blessed by being in our current parish, with a priest who genuinely loves his faith and vocation, and a congregation that has experienced a renewal of love for the sacraments, Church tradition, Scripture study and prayer. I am very grateful to the Lord for this - in my own personal experience it is not very common, though, again, thank the Lord it seems to be becoming more so.
