What is a defrocked priest?

Can you explain what a defrocked priest is, does the church still use this practice and this word?
 
Dear Mamofsix,

Defrocked is not a Church term. It is usually the way the press expresses the Church’s disciplining of recalcitrant priests such as not allowing them to celebrate Mass and administer the sacraments. So a defrocked priest is one who is not allowed to function as a priest.
