I have read some criticism of fundamentalists and have been told that the following attributes apply to them: do not believe in evolution, read the Bible literally in direct opposition, in some cases, to established “science,” are poorly educated, are willing to harm or kill others.

I have also been told that fundies in the Catholic Church put the entire Church into a bad light as regards the secular world, since, at least as far as science, which means only evolution, fundies will not be taken seriously by the secular world and so neither will the rest of the Church, that part being those who accept evolution, which is also called “science” as if it is the only discipline in science that matters.

I do not believe that a fundamental interpretation of the Bible is wrong. I am against reinterpretting anything in the Bible period, just to allow for accommodation with the secular world. I see a real danger in allowing a neo-Darwinian form of evolution that is not guided by God as being accepted. I see this as eventually leading to nothing supernatural being accepted as recorded in the Bible and both God and His miracles being turned into nice, instructive little stories that never happened in “real” life. God forbid!

May the name of Jesus Christ be praised!

A fundamentalist reads the Bible literally. He may or may not beleive in religious violence, depending on his exact interpretation of the text. His views are incompatible with both established science and orthodox Catholicism.

There’s a bit of consusion here because older theologians talked about the primacy of the “literal sense”. However what they meant was “the sense as intended by the writer”. We can also interpret scripture allegorically - the song of songs as a metaphor for God’s love for Israel, morally - the destruction of Sodom as illustration of the evils of homosexuality - anagogically - a technical word, but the manna that the children of Israel ate in the wilderness prefigures the Eucharist - and historically - the Exodus took place from an historical place called Egypt.
The fundamentalist accepts mainly the historical sense. The Catholic the “literal”, or “that intended by the writer”.

What is a fundie?
“Fundie” is a bigoted epithet used by people as a personal attack on Christians they do not agree with.

“Fundie” is not a faith, nor is it a denomination. It is a term used to belittle other people.

“Fundie” is not used by those who really believe we should do unto others as we would have them do to us.

Those who do not like terms like “Romanist” or “Papist” would never use the term “Fundie” to mock the faith of others, unless they are of the mindset that only they should be treated with respect.

This, though, is unfortunately common.

uh wrong. a fundie is an evangelical fundamentalist of the white American-usually Southern or Mid-Western- Protestant Republican persuasion and it may or may not be used in the derogatory sense. I happen to live near Lynchburg, Virginia, the late Mr. Falwell’s hometown and home of Liberty University and this group calls themselves ‘Fundies’–quite proudly.

“Fundamentalist” has both a perjorative (insulting) use, as described in most of the posts above, and a technical usage which true fundamentalists are proud to ascribe to themselves, as the last poster noted. It involves adhering to certain beliefs as defined at the end of the 18th century in response to liberalizing trends in Protestantism.

Some use “fundie” or “fundamentalist” as a synonym for “extremist.” And it may apply to non-Christian faiths as well (i.e., “Taliban”).

In some cases, they are correct and accurate in that usage; in other cases, they are not.
