I have attended some funerals, and would like to know what they are exactly. What is the purpose of a funeral for a Catholic? Thank you for reading.

The purpose of it is a) for people to pay last-respects to the body, and b) to pray for the soul.

Funerals should be penitential. We are praying for the soul of the deceased. Unfortunately some parishes have made funerals into mini-canonizations to celebrate the deceased’ sentry into Heaven…(which we can’t be certain has happened yet).
 
It’s the last chance to bear witness that an individual lived and is remembered.
