What is a good book (or books) about the history of the Catholic Church and/or Christianity in general?

As part of the homeschooling curriculum that I use, we read a book called The Story of the Church. It is somewhat like a textbook, but not too dry. It gives a pretty nice overview of the early Church and can give you a springboard for more in depth studies if something strikes your fancy.

I have a copy of “A History of the Christian Church” by Williston Walker, 4th edition. I thought it quite good.

You may want to check this website, I know he is a historian, he may have recommendations:

calvin2catholic.com/Home.html

or check Jimmy Akin’s Blog, he too may have recommendations. His blog is above the Forum page…The Fathers know best…

A good book on Church history and the Fathers of the Church is The Fathers Know Best by Jimmy Akin.

Here is a link to his blog:

Edit: I see pablope beat me to it. By the way, I was a confused protestant too. I’ll be confirmed in the Catholic Church in less than a month. I’ll be happy to answer any questions if I can.

“The pilgrims progress” is a real beauty, such factual truths with an allegorical theme, very spiritually oriented, and a real must for any christian.
Extremely fun to read also!!

Try The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church by H.W. Crocker

It is a lengthy and somewhat difficult series on just one aspect of Christian history (namely belief systems), but I got a lot out of Jaroslav Pelikan’s five volume history The Christian Tradition. If you can handle it, this is an excellent read.

If you want a survey of all of church history, the six-volume Penguin History of the Church is a decent choice.

If you want a highly opinionated (but well-written) one-volume history, I can recommend Paul Johnson’s A History of Christianity.

Hi,
I just started reading " He liked tuesdays best" polish bestseller The story of everyday life of John Paul II.
I think this could be interesting story because is wrote by his best friend and long associate Archbishop Mieczysław Mokrzycki with journalist Brygida Grysiak.
The book speaks about an ordinary day of John Paul II in the Vatican, and why he liked Tuesdays…

You can find more about this book at **http://www.jp2books.com/

this was posted by someone who is “banned” and designates his persuasion as “catholic” but not “Catholic” or “Roman Catholic” That is significant owing to the location of this person in London, where “catholic” and “Catholic” mean two different things.

Pilgrim’s Progress is a Protestant book. You won’t get an accurate Catholic viewpoint in it.

I stumbled upon Eerdmann’s History of Christianity which gives a lot of information in one volume and is highly illustrated. I don’t have it at hand, it must be 20 to 30 years old by now.

I am currently reading A concise history of the Catholic Church by Thomas Bokenkotter. It is interesting. And it starts at the beginning I guess lol.

“Founded on a Rock” was my favorite. It’s easy reading, yet detailed and to the point. It was commissioned by Pope Pius XII and written under Pope John XXIII.
