My BIL is becoming a Deacon in June and we are invited. What would be a good gift to give him? Thanks.

Pyx - small gilt vessel that can hold a few Hosts to bring Holy Communion to the sick, homebound, prisoners etc.

Rosary

Bible

Prayer Bouquet - Commit to praying for him (i.e 10 Our Fathers etc) as well as the offering of a Mass intention.

Religious article gift card

Dalmatics - outermost garment for a Deacon for Mass

Deacons also use albs, cinctures, surplices as well as a cope and humeral veil for Vespers and or Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Reversible stoles - i.e violet/white for baptism

I vote for a stole…

They baptize often…and minister to the sick…a beautiful white one with a nice design element would see a lot of use. 😉

He probably already has a pyx, a favorite Bible,
and some of the other things…But it’s nice to have a choice of stoles.
😉

He probably has most of the things he really needs. Stoles can be expensive and most deacons like to choose their own. My husband’s stoles were about 300 each 18 years ago but they were well made and lasted this lonf. A cope is not needed as the parish usually had one that all the clergy share.

A study edition of the Roman Missal or lectionary, published by Liturgy Training Publications, is a good idea. Also find out if he has his own ritual editions of yhe marriage, baptism and rite od Christian frnerals. A subscription to Deacon Digest if he doesn’t have it.

I would really ask what he needs sins a deacon really doesn’t need that much. Rosary and bible he surely has already and might even have a pix since he already is probably visiting the ill and bringing communion.

How about a non Spiritual item as he most probably has most Spiritual items…

A Gift voucher to the Local Supermarket.

A Gift voucher for the local Petrol (Gas) Station. He might appreciate this one if he is running around in his car a lot to his parishioners.

Practical things.

This is a good thought. Our deacon’s gas bills are pretty high due to his visiting the sick and home bound.

Maybe a nice set of the Gospels presented in one of those expensive metal Evangelarium things.

After years of formation - hours of studying, class, prayer - he could probably use a gift certificate to a nice restaurant and some movie tickets so that he can take his neglected wife on a date.

Something along these lines would be a great idea. The deacons I know, by the time they completed formation, typically had not only a set of the liturgical books they would need (Rites of Baptism, Christian Burial, chapel edition of the Missal, a set of Lectionaries), but also several different Bible translations. A great alternate would also be an Amazon gift card, as any new deacon is likely to have a continuing need for Homiletics helps and ongoing spiritual reading.

The most used gift I’ve seen is a good, sturdy garment bag large enough for vestments. My dad, a Roman Deacon, made them for later classes over the years, and I have seen major liturgies where over a dozen of the garment bags he’s made are in use.

She has been studying right along with the other wives. They need to know how to be supportive so she studies and gets together with the other wives.

There is a big difference between studying along with her husband and going out on a date. I vote for the gift certificate for dinner out.

I wish someone gave us that when my husband was ordained.
