What is a labyrinth?

I have friends that talk about doing labyrinths at their Catholic Church. I was always under the impression that it was a faith journey type of thing. I mentioned it to my parents and they seemed shocked that a Catholic Church would have teens do such a thing. I asked them what a labyrinth contained that made it against church teaching. They weren’t able to answer, they just remembered hearing bad things about them in the past. Could someone first explain what a labyrinth is? and also why it goes against church teaching?
