**You here it said all the time by mostly Catholics. But what really are Protestants? What are they protesting?

I know originally they were members of the Catholic religion and protested against the many false teachings of Catholicism which they were involved with.

So I ask… are non-Catholics really protesting Catholicism and therefore Protestants as this religion has label every relgion save themselves?**

Welcome to CAF, Whathell!
What are the false teachings of Catholicism?

PS: I have a feeling this thread will go to 100 directions. 😃

Protestants are those Christians who’s communities trace their roots to the Protestant Reformation or who hold the theology of those communities.

Protestants are the branches of christianity that started with the Reformation.
They were protesting some of the practices and teachings of not only the Roman Catholic Church but of Apostolic Christiany in general, since many of their criticism of the RCC can be applied to the Eastern Orthodox Church or the Coptic Orthodox Church or the Apostolic Fathers Church.

**Ummmm… were these not Catholic members gone wild? LOL

Are not ex-Catholics then not the real ones protesting and therefore Protestans?**

Whathell…

In essence, there is a grain of truth to what you say…

Though Presbyterians, Anglicans, Baptists, Non-Denoms, etc are all technically considered Protestant, they are not Protestants in the strict since of the word…

Many Protestants do not even know what it means to say they are a Protestant. They aren’t protesting against anything.

With respect, you however, would fit the bill of a protestant. Why? You disagree and Protest what the Catholic Church teaches.

You are also correct in saying an Ex-Catholic is more of a protestant than a normal in the pew joe protestant. as Mentioned, most protestants, don’t even understand what it means.

That being said, I personally don’t care for the term myself… though I will use it if needed…

I think a Better description from a Catholic point of view is Separated Brothers and Sisters. Still Christian, and not separated from Christ, but not in Union.

I understand that you do not agree that protestants are separated, but as mentioned, this is from the Catholic POV

In Christ

That is okay. Anyway, the Thread is about what a Protestant really is.
Yes it is. BUT, you shouldn’t go around accusing the Catholic Church of false teachings (as you have done in a few threads) if you can’t back it up.

Yes, they are Protestants and there is a simple reason why. Even if they were never Catholic and even if they never heard of the Catholic Church, they have turned away from the traditional way of worshiping God and moved into a method developed less than 500 years ago. Simply put, they are using the Protestant methodology, so they are an off-shoot of it. If you created your own faith system based on the Bible alone, you have rejected all other systems, creating a new one, unique in the world. This is the essence of Protestantism. Now, you may have left a Baptist or Methodist church, but you are leving for some reason.

Protestants are Anti-Catholic period. They opposes anything that is Catholic. In the old days, they are commonly refer to as heretics…

The Catholic Church follow the Bible for the Catholic Church form the Bible especially the NT… For without the Catholic Church, you would probably have Gnostic Gospels in your Bible had it not been for the authority of the Church.

Laudatur Iesus Christus.

I do not believe this is an accurate statement of the origin of the term “Protestant.”

Here is the discussion from the Catholic Encyclopedia (1911):

I Origin of the Name “Protestantism”]

The Diet of the Holy Roman Empire, assembled at Speyer in April, 1529, resolved that, according to a decree promulgated at the Diet of Worms (1524), communities in which the new religion was so far established that it could not without great trouble be altered should be free to maintain it, but until the meeting of the council they should introduce no further innovations in religion, and should not forbid the Mass, or hinder Catholics from assisting thereat.

Against this decree, and especially against the last article, the adherents of the new Evangel — the Elector Frederick of Saxony, the Landgrave of Hesse, the Margrave Albert of Brandenburg, the Dukes of Lüneburg, the Prince of Anhalt, together with the deputies of fourteen of the free and imperial cities — entered a solemn protest as unjust and impious. The meaning of the protest was that the dissentients did not intend to tolerate Catholicism within their borders. On that account they were called Protestants.

In course of time the original connotation of “no toleration for Catholics” was lost sight of, and the term is now applied to, and accepted by, members of those Western Churches and sects which, in the sixteenth century, were set up by the Reformers in direct opposition to the Catholic Church. The same man may call himself Protestant or Reformed: the term Protestant lays more stress on antagonism to Rome; the term Reformed emphasizes adherence to any of the Reformers. Where religious indifference is prevalent, many will say they are Protestants, merely to signify that they are not Catholics. In some such vague, negative sense, the word stands in the new formula of the Declaration of Faith to be made by the King of England at his coronation; viz.: “I declare that I am a faithful Protestant”. During the debates in Parliament it was observed that the proposed formula effectively debarred Catholics from the throne, whilst it committed the king to no particular creed, as no man knows what the creed of a faithful Protestant is or should be.

I recommend that you submit your question to “Ask an Apologist” thread. They can give you authoritative answers. All I can offer is guesses.

Quite simple really - the Catholic Church is the original universal Church with a lineage back to St. Peter. Protestants “protest” this fact by objecting to the Apostolic authority of Rome, and a lot of the doctrine etc.

Google and Wikipedia will help you out a lot with these basics.

It is just a blanket term to conveniently describe any non-Catholic Christian. It is in no way derogatory, and Protestants have no problem with this label as they use it themselves.

Note: I will happily refute anything that you claim is a false teaching.

Peace brother.

That’s what religion is all about. Refuting or believing ideas that cannot be tested. No one is right, and no one is wrong.
