what is a pyx?

On Holy Thursday after the post communion prayer, the procession forms, with the cross-bearer at its head. The blessed sacrament, accompanied by lighted candles and incense, is carried through the church to the place of reservation, to the singing of the hymn “Pange Lingua” or some other Eucharistic song.

The blessed sacrament should be reserved in a closed tabernacle or pyx.

Hi.

A pyx is a simple small container with a lid that can hold a few portions of the Body, the Host. It differs from a ciborium, which holds many Hosts and can be placed inside a tabernacle.

Pyxs are often used by extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to take the Eucharist to those who are homebound. In what you are describing it seems the same function is being done—only inside the church.

A pyx is a container large enough for one host. It is used to bring Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. The Altar of Repose in your parish was not a pyx. Your pastor probably brought the Blessed Sacrament to the tabernacle in the sacristy after everyone left.

Pyxes can hold more than one host. Ours hold about 12 and you can get some large enough to hold 24.
 
I think the container which holds the lunette which contains the large host for Exposition is also called a pyx.

We use a large ciborium, which looks like the priest’s chalice with a cover.

I think the intent of the instruction is that the host must be in a closed container and not exposed.

I’ve seen a few that will hold about 30… used specifically by hospital & prison chaplains.
