A synod is a council or assembly. In the Church, it can be a meeting of bishops from a particular region with the pope.
An encyclical is a papal letter written to the Church and/or to the world, or to some segment within it. John Paul II’s Evangelium Vitae (Latin, “the gospel of life”) is an example of an encyclical.
