I would like to know, I hope I am not breaking any rules on asking such a question. I read many saints are allowed to see heaven or hell for different purposes, because God has allowed them to see but those are not NDE and obviously their accounts are very catholic. But what about people that have had such experiences some also very catholic and some just plain wierd. . I know that the devil was once a angel of light and can decieve. So are we to try and discern such things. Please dont kick me out I just want to know what peoples opinions are. Thank You. :o

For everyone who might not know, NDE stands for Near Death Experience. Many NDE’s contain lements that are what we would call unnatural. For example, some people at the point of death might experience an Out of Body Experience, when they like a ghost float above and see their body on the operation table. Others will be transported down a long tunnel and come into the presence of bright, yet not blinding, Light. Sometimes, NDE’s contain encounters with angelic beings, as well as reunions with lost loved ones.

In any case, St. Paul, in discussing spiritual gifts, exhorts us to test the spirits, since not all Spirits are of God. If any NDE contains material that goes against Christian teaching (such as a reincarnation) then the NDE should be held suspect. Can NDE’s be demonic? Perhaps. I remember reading a TAN Book. I believe it’s titled Raised from the Dead. At the end, the author, a Marian priest, discusses NDE’s and his opinions concerning them. If I recall correctly, he does in fact mention the Devil as an angel prowling as an angel of Light, and how the Light that many people experience in NDE’s may in fact be this same being.

Also coming to mind, the Desert Fathers and many saints of the East, were very skeptical when it came to visions. They were very well aware that Satan could be the one initiating the vision. So, they often ignored the vision, or acted as though nothing out of the ordinary happened. If it in fact were God communicating through a vision, they would know it after repeated visions.
