I’ve been looking up different -isms online and I get why rascism is bad and somewhat how sexism is bad but I don’t understand ageism in the sense that the law sanctions it. I mean if discrimination based on age is bad then pedophila and child labor by that logic is ok. Maybe I don’t completely understand the definition. I mean there’s a drinking age, a voting age, a retirement age and an age that you are requirement to attend compulsive education, and age of sexual consent By definition these are all ageist institutions right? I mean you hear alot of pedophiles justify their behavior by the arguement of ageism. If not wanting to “do it” with an old saggy man makes me ageist then so be it. I’m sorry but old ppl doin it is ewww.

Ageism is discrimination by age when age is not a bona fide qualification for the job or other decision in question. Pedophiles are taking advantage of people far too young to be able to decide whether to let soemone touch them sexually or too young to defend themselves etc. Child labor laws are controversial because they vary from place to place and time to time. The question is whether a 14-year-old is able to work eight hours without being harmed. Where I live the law has decided it depends on the type of work. Farm work is available when factory work isn’t. It also depends on the time of year and day. This is because of compulsory schooling. But an increasing number of youth and parents question compulsory schooling, since expanding it has not corresponded with increased literacy or competence but often the reverse.
When people are too old to be safe drivers, quick and powerful firefighters or otherwise safe in certain jobs, they cannot realistically do those jobs. But some people are as capable of such work at 65 as others are at 45 or earlier. It’s individual.
I doubt any age-discrimination suit could force you to be married to someone you aren’t attracted to. Mostly it’s to do with retirement laws.

Try finding work when you’re a career cop and out of a job at the age of 46. Everyone is nice and polite, and “we’ll keep your application on file”, but the cold fact is that that not going to hire you when they can hire a 26-year old to do the same job.
