What is allowed?

I want to be Catholic and will start RCIA at my parish in September. I know there are some things I can’t do yet, like take the eucharist.

But what else is OK? Can I pray traditional Catholic prayer like the rosary, and can I do the sign of the cross?

Great decision on wanting to be Catholic! Go right ahead and pray the rosary and make the sign of the Cross, there’s nothing wrong with that at all.

You can do pretty much everything. Exceptions would be taking Holy Communion and performing certain functions at Mass like being a lector. Other that that, you are fully entitled to say any prayers you like, receive blessings, cross yourself with holy water, etc., etc. In fact, all of these are things that might help you on your journey!

I just want to add that when my wife was in RCIA, although she couldn’t receive Eucharist she did spend hours in Eucharistic Adoration (where she often said silent Rosaries 🙂 )… You might want look into that…

Like others said you can pretty much do anything but partake of the Eucharist and be part of some ministries at the moment.

Certainly pray the rosary, attend Eucharistic Adoration, attend Mass, pray, bless yourself with Holy Water etc etc.

And I would suggest hold off on going to Confession until you have had some instruction on how to make a good one (assuming of course you have been validly baptized)

Welcome. RCIA can be a really great way to not only get to understand what it means to be Catholic but also to enrich and draw closer to Our Lord.
 
In our FSSP parish there is No RCIA. The priest gives individual instruction. Just like in the old days.

In fact when I converted many years ago the priest and I would split a pizza and a six pack during Instruction.
 
you can join in everything except partake in sacraments. for that you would need to be baptized first and become a member of the Church. and for that to happen, you would need to complete your RCIA first

not sure if you’ve already discussed this in RCIA, the seven sacraments are (in order)

Baptism
Confirmation
Eucharist
Reconcilliation/Penance/Confession
Matrimony
Holy Orders
Anointing of the Sick

you can’t receive the other six if you’re not baptized yet. but everything else, you can do

in our parish, RCIA is given by the priest himself 👍

our preist is very educated, i can’t think of anyone better to give RCIA

I believe that in danger of death a non-Catholic can receive the sacraments of penance and anointing of the sick. Obviously the OP was asking about things that are actually going to happen in his real experience of going to a Catholic church, though; I don’t think he was wondering whether he can receive Holy Orders.

My kind of red-blooded Priest…rare today … but yes, they’re still out there. 🙂

I’m just now seeing this post. I created a thread about the same thing. I really should search for posts! I’m going to join RCIA also. I plan to this fall.
