What is an Akatist?

I often print them out, but recently I checked out a Book of Akathists from a library (published by Holy Trinity Monastery, I think you can find it for $30 online) and I absolutely love it, especially the Akathist for the Repose of the Departed. You can books of Akathists online from various vendors, probably even on Amazon.
