What is an annulment?

I was previously married for about 3 years and divorced. Now remarried for 25 years. I do not understand what annulment means and don’t know if I would be allowed to join the Catholic Church. I have been listening to Catholic Answers on the radio for several months and am seriously considering converting. If annulment is necessary, on what grounds would it be granted and how long would that take?
