Much like an anti-biotic, an anti-Catholic is a drug that, when it comes in contact with a Catholic, it will weaken or kill it. Much like anti-biotics, repeated use of anti-Catholics tend to make them less effective and more difficult to use.

something that weakens catholicism. makes sense but its a little to broad. its so broad that cafeteria catholics would classify as anti-catholics. because their opinions on birth control, abortion & gay marriage weakens catholicism.

Well, you missed my joke in that last post.

To me, an anti-CAtholic is one who is not so much interested in teaching what is right about their faith but what is wrong about mine. To that end, they see Catholics as something less than fellow Christians (or humans). Catholics are evil, demonic beings who are all doomed to hell for following Pagan Rome. Now, I do not feel that everyone who compairs their faith to mine is anti-Catholic. It is when you want to attack, not contrast, that it becomes a problem.

Now the question is, how do you identify someone who “goes out of his way to attack the teachings and the people of the Catholic church”. Lets use this forum for example.

Let’s imagine that someone has a question about the Catholic teaching on marriage.

Catholics on the Forum do their best to explain the teaching, but certain things are hard for the OP to understand, so he asks for a simpler breakdown.

Just at that moment, an anti-Catholic chimes in to the thread and says, “Don’t worry about all that legalistic nonsense. God doesn’t require that you follow all these stupid and confusing rules. Simply call on the name of Jesus, be saved, and do whatever you want. You don’t need a ceremony to be married.”

If this example seems unclear, let’s substitute traffic law for Church law. Let’s imagine that we’re on a traffic forum.

Let’s imagine that someone has a question about how to merge on to a highway.

Drivers on the Forum try to explain it as best they can, but certain things are unclear to the OP, so he asks for a simpler breakdown of the procedure.

Just then, a scofflaw chimes in and says, “Don’t worry about all that legalistic nonsense. God doesn’t require that you follow all these stupid and confusing rules. Simply call on the name of Jesus, be saved, and do whatever you want. You don’t need to shoulder-check and then match your speed to the on-coming traffic to merge on to the highway.”

Would you classify this response as “helpful” or “unhelpful”? (Should someone who is attempting to merge on to a highway follow this advice, or should he continue to try to understand what the other posters are explaining to him?)

Well, LaMar is the most recent example. His very hostile language and bigotry pretty much exemplifies anti-Catholicism. The only problem is that most anti-Catholics are fundamentalist and/or evangelical Protestants, so the label on him doesn’t quite fit as well.

However,
Two days ago we were visited by a fundamentalist by the name of “someotherguy.” Some other guy argued about sola scriptura with us here and informed us on other parts of the forum that he was leading a team from his church to follow the Pope around everywhere during his visit, staging what I assume will be some sort of demonstrations, that he tells us will be posted to a website and to YouTube. I do hope he comes back here and points us to these sites because I have a feeling we’ll be seeing classic anti-Catholicism in all its glory.

I was a benign anti-Catholic. I never “went out of my way” to attack Catholicism, but if the issue arose, I would certainly not hesitate to attack those doctrines that I thought were errant. I remember inviting my Catholic neighbor to some of our Protestant services in hopes of possibly converting them.

Later, when I began to actually investigate what the Catholic Church believed, I would discuss my findings with some Protestant mentors. Although they had never before spoken to me against the Catholic Church, I began to see their anti-Catholic sentiments in our debates. Anti-Catholicism stems primarily from misconceived opinions of what the Catholic Church is. The following quote sums it up nicely.

See, I don’t see you as attacking. You can be argumentative at times. In fact, it is almost comical how well you jump into the frey. But, I never really detect the venom that I do in the “anti-Catholic” posters. Besides, you tend to go after anyone that you disagree with.

I enjoy most of your posts. Like all of us, you are on a journey of discovery. I do not know where it will end, but I do like the fact that I am in contact with you while you travel.

I go along with Dave Armstrong’s definition that an Anti-Catholic or Anti-Catholicism is a person or a position that tries to define the Catholic Faith as outside of or opposed to Christianity (especialy "Biblical Christianity") Jack Chick, Bart Brewster, and a lot of fundamentalists and evangelicals fall into this definintion
