I’m reading about the history of the fraternity I’m rushing for and I saw that it was supposedly founded by a man who wanted to form a protective society for university students who were being ganged up on by the thugs of the man who became an “Antipope”: Baldassarre Cossa, AKA John XXIII.

What is an Antipope? And why did the Catholic Church call him that?

So are they just accidents? Or work of satan? Or what? Just general confusion?

So if I’m understanding the term correctly: anyone who makes a claim to the Chair of Peter without being the legitimate successor, for whatever the reason may be?

Pretty much.

Now, Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria isn’t an antipope, since his see has traditionally been called Pope, even while it was in union with Rome, which it hasn’t been for about 1.5 millenia.

Some were due to impeded access to Rome.
Some were due to walkouts from the election.

Many are conclavist heretics. Most of those are sedevaticanists.

You read my mind! I was just about to suggest whether the modern majority (well minority I guess) are sedevaticanists.

They believe the Chair (well Throne too) of Peter is vacant?

lol.

Just curious but what is sedevaticanists? I have never heard that term before.
Those who believe that the Chair of Peter is vacant. Sedevacantists believe that the last five popes (Benedict XVI, JPII, JPI, Paul VI, and John XXIII) are/were not true popes.

What a strange idea. Do you have any idea what their logic is behind that?

They believe the second Vatican Council was a warping or distortion of God’s Mass, and a true Pope is infallible and would never make a “mistake” like that. Therefore, they’re not valid Popes because they all celebrate the Novus Ordo and/or succed an “anti-pope” who did.

This is just my guess. I don’t know for sure.

The Pope is infallible in regards to the church teachings or just dogmas?? The Spirit somehow supernaturally protects the Church from teaching error…so no Pope can ever teach a false teaching?? But wouldn’t the Spirit be denying the “free will” of a bad Pope to teach error??🤷

The first antipope was St. Hippolytus (he’s a saint because he was later reconciled and died a martyr). He essentially claimed Pope St. Zephyrinius and a few of his successors were Sabellian heretics along with the rest of the Church so he declared himself bishop of Rome and his small band of followers the true Catholic Church.

Most antipopes, however, came on the scene through politics. The anti-pope in the OP was just such an example. In such cases, the real Pope would be driven from Rome by princes, etc. who didn’t like him and they would install their own Pope.

Am I the only one who thinks the part I put in bold face is dubious?

…I’m going to admit that i don’t know what dubious means 😃

This is something I’ve wondered about. Good question. Hopefully someone can answer.
