I believe this is currently an honorary title. An Archdeacon would assist the Bishop as needed.
On Catholic radio, I heard something of an Archdeacon to the pope.

What would his responsibilities be?

Was it a current or historical reference? If current I imagine it would be a personal assistant.

See the New Advent explanation.

Excellent article. Something of interest:

do to his role as assistant to the bishop, sometimes he was more powerful than the archpriest—he set up his own tribunals, etc. It is also interesting to know, that the archdeacon was sometimes a priest—“archidiaconatus rurales

An Archdeacon was once a principal assistant to a bishop, chiefly as regarded matters other than spiritual - administrative duties in regard to the diocese and administration of the diocese’s charities/distribution of alms were very commonly included in the scope of his tasks. The position could be compared to a Staff Assistant, Administrative Assistant, or Executive Assistant in a secular setting or the Adjutant in a military setting. These days, the functions historically associated with it are frequently the job of laypersons with special expertise in the matters or are fulfilled by vicars, deans, chancellors, auxiliaries, etc.

The position is virtually obsolete in the Latin Church; it still exists in the Eastern and Oriental Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox (as well as in the Anglican Communion).

In the Eastern and Oriental Churches, the title is sometimes conferred strictly as an honorific but there are instances where the holder continues to fulfill particular responsibilities for the hierarch.
