I don’t know if my question fits into this category.

I am reading LUMEN GENTIUM =
http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_...s/vat-ii_const_19641121_lumen-gentium_en.html

In LUMEN GENTIUM , I found the word “Apostolic” and I don’t understand the meaning of Apostolic work / labor.
  1. For all their works, prayers and apostolic endeavors, their ordinary married and family life,…
  2. …and even if many of them devote all their energies to apostolic work
  3. These laymen spend themselves completely in apostolic labors, working the Lord’s field with much success.
Could someone help me with the examples of what a laity can do with apostolic work?
Does apostolic work have to be ordered/assigned by the Church to a laity?

Thanks,
David

The explanation of apostolic work in that document is so broad that I have hard time trying to find the real life examples of a laity can do / should do to engage in apostolic work as described theoretically in that document.

Maybe a summary of examples of apostolic works?
Anyone? thanks

"But the laity likewise share in the priestly, prophetic, and royal office of Christ and therefore have their own share in the mission of the whole people of God in the Church and in the world.(2)

Living life as a practicing Catholic thereby giving example. Going to Mass, going to Adoration, chatting to others outside of Mass especially the stranger or new comer to the parish/Church etc. Being involved in volunteering for St. V.de P - in their charity shops, on their phone lines to answer calls for assitance, being part of the team that goes to these same peoples’ home to see what assistance is needed etc., volunteering at their Homeless Shelters.

Volunteering at food kitchens for the homeless and sharing your Faith in appropriate ways.
Visiting sick or lonely or elderly neighbours.
Volunteering to help around at Church - caring for the gardens or be on the cleaning roster.
Assisting with RCIA if knowledgeable etc.
Assisting ones own family members, ones’ neighbors, people in ones’ parish, and finally praying for and donating to help others in need around the world e.g. after earthquakes.
Teaching the Faith to ones’ own children/grandchildren (assuming they are Catholic).
Undertaking religious education in public schools etc when volunteers or positions are advertised etc - if you are suited to this.
Buying or supporting initiatives in the purchasing of Catholic books for missions.
Speaking up with respect to others in our conversations - discussion boards etc even in our hobbies in which we may meet with others, when something comes up in discussion e.g. not attending a event as we will be attending Mass and public procession etc., we can put up what we believe and why. All moments to evalgelize others - with respect.

In the work place via career paths - by undertaking study in theology (perhaps writing blogs?), psychology so as to help heal others by caring for the sick (including doctors here too), being affiliated with political parties (or independants) whose policies are in alignment with Catholcism - all ways in which we can use our Catholic perspective to influence society for the better.

By prayer, by alms-giving and also sacrificing for others.

APOSTOLICAM ACTUOSITATEM
“32. There are many aids for lay persons devoted to the apostolate, namely, study sessions, congresses, periods of recollection, spiritual exercises, frequent meetings, conferences, books, and periodicals directed toward the acquisition of a deeper knowledge of sacred Scripture and Catholic doctrine, the nourishment.of spiritual life, the discernment of world conditions,” ← all with the aim of sharing the knowledge with others to lead them to Christ (sharing our knowledge, our voting choices, our own small efforts to make small changes within our lives e.g. waste less food as just one example).

By doing our own best to live a morally upright life - giving example to others by not using contraception for one, by not co-habiting before marriage, by being cheerful even when we don’t feel like it, by putting others before ourselves (obviously use prudence here), being polite and courteous and respectful towards all. Living in the world but not of the world. Living out the Gospel in our daily lives to our best ability.

Depending on what your talents are - perhaps bringing the Catholic perspective to nursing, or teaching, or science etc wrt employment. Even a cashier can be polite and cheerful and courteous towards all. Domestic cleaner? Do your job the best you can - not just what is required or will get your through.

Come across any e-petitions concerning the passing of euthanasia or abortion laws/amendments petitioning they not be passed - sign them, send the politicians letters etc and clearly state your opposition to these.
