What is Authority?

The translators of the King James Version translated many words consistently, but not the Greek words for power and authority.

For example, Jesus says in Luke 10:19, behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpians, and over all the Power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Although the word power is used twice in this verse, two different words are found in the original Greek. What Jesus actually said was, I have given you Authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Jesus is talking about the power over the devil, demons, evil spirits, and all his cohorts. We need to realize that we’ve got authority over them.

Does the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ have ( or need) any less authority today than it had in the first century: No way.

The value of our authority rests on the power that is behind that authority. God Himself is the power behind our authority! The devil and his forces are obliged to recognize our authority. What is authority? Authority is delagated power.

Paul told believers to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might ( Eph. 6:10). We need to use our authority to resist the devil.

My Prophecy: The Holy Spirit says, Power on earth invested in the Name of Jesus Christ and obtained by Him through His overcoming the enemy belongeth unto the Church. Therefore, exercise that authority, for it belongs to you on the earth, and in this life ye shall reign by Christ Jesus.

It is interesting to see a Protestant make a post about authority when they deny the Authority of the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, the Authority of St. Peter, and the Authority of the Pope.

The Authorized King James Version is an English translation of the Christian Bible begun in 1604 and first published in 1611 by the Church of England. The Great Bible was the first “authorized version” issued by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII.[3] In January 1604, King James I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England.

The king gave the translators instructions designed to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the episcopal structure of the Church of England and its beliefs about an ordained clergy. The translation was by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England.

The greek ‘eksousia’ (authority) appears in the NT 108x

-vs-

‘authority’ in the OT appears in KJV only 2x, and both of these are translated from different Hebrew words.

When Christ ascended, He transferred His authority to the Church. He is the Head of the Church, and believers make up the Body. Christ’s authority has to be perpetuated through His Body, which is on the earth. ( throughout Eph and elsewhere in the Epistles,Paul uses the human body as an illustration of the Body of Christ).

Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father, the place of authority, and we are seated with Him. If you know anything about history, you know that to sit at the right hand of the King means authority. We died with Christ, and we were raised with Him. This is not something God is going to do in the future; He already has done it.

Which Church? Catholic? Anglican? Methodist? Lutehran? Oh, wiat, that’s right! There was only the Catholic Church at that time! The others were made by malcontents who wanted to make the WOrd of Gad say what they wanted it to!

I have a book titled “Jewish New Testament Commentary” written by David H. Stern.
He is a Jew who converted to Christianity - I don’t know what denomination, but not Catholic.

I found his commentary on Matthew 18:18-20 VERY interesting. Will give the Scripture text first, before his comments.
Mt 18:18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 18:19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

In his commentary, he cites the Jewish Encyclopedia 3:215 (article titled “Binding and Loosing”):
His quote from the Jewish Encyclopedia:

*…“In this sense Jesus, when appointing his disciples to be his successors, used the familiar formula (Mt 16:19, 18:18). **By these words he virtually invested them with the same authority ***as that which he found belonging to the scribes and Pharisees…”

I found it very interesting that the Jews would include this in their encyclopedia and that they recognize Our Lord’s words for what they are.

The following is from Stern’s personal commentary on the passage:
(Regarding vs 19-20 “about two or three gathered in my name”)

*…The problem with this is that the passage is not about prayer–…
Rather, Yeshua, speaking to those who **have authority to regulate ***Messianic communal live (vv. 15-17), commissions them to establish New Covenant halakkah, that is, **to make authoritative decisions **where there is a question about how Messianic life ought to be lived. …
…

Thus, according to vv. 18-20 Yeshua’s other talmidim join Kefa (16:19) in replacing “the Levitical cohanim and the judge who shall be in those days” (Deut 17:8-12) as the final earthly repository of halakhic authority. However, the new system was not established instantaneously; for later yeshua could still advise the Jewish public to obey the Torah-teachers and the P’rushim because they “sit in the seat of Moshe” (23:2-3&N). In fact, even today, two thousand years later, the new system has hardly been established at all – Messianic communal practice is far more ad hoc and makes far less use of received wisdom and established precedents than one might expect.

When I read this last sentence, I just wanted to shout - “But it has been established. Have you not heard of the Catholic Church, the Papacy and the Magisterium? And it’s been here for all 2000 of those years.”

CW, Do you think the Body of Christ is a body of Catholics or Body of Born again believers?

Everyone who has been baptized under the Trinitarian Fromula is in the Body of Christ. Those who reject teachings of the Catholic Church have an imperfect communion. This is not to say that have no chance at salvation, because they are in the Body of Christ. I am just saying that non-Catholic Christians have are lacking in the fullness pf Truth that our Savior wants us to have. Protestants and other non-CAtholic Christians have varying degrees of Truth. After all Jesus did not found thousands of denominations but a single Church. When Protestants removed themselves during the Reformation, they willingly seperated themselves from the earthly Head of the Body of Christ. What is a body without a head?
