While the Haydock may provide us with his ‘selections’ from the best of Biblical scholarship in the 16th and 17th centuries, the field itself has moved on a little since then! This is in no small part due to such brilliant Catholic Biblical scholars as Joseph Fitzmeyer, Raymond Brown and Daniel Harrington (all of them, I think, Jesuits).
If you’re interested in up-to-date Catholic Biblical scholarship, then you could try either:
D Senior and J Collins (eds),
The Catholic Study Bible, 2nd Ed.
The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible RSV-CE, 2nd Ed.
The former is more overtly scholarly and intellectual, and it’s approach alienates some traditional Catholics. The latter is a more ‘safe pair of hands’. Both are good. If the latter were published with a sewn binding, I’d buy it tomorrow.
Peace be with you all.
