Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
(Matthew 12:31-32 RSV-CE)

What is this sin? What is the sin of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?

In the context of the passage, the sin is a continuous calling of Good Evil.
The English translation doesn’t do the passage justice, for the present tense in the Greek is not the same as the Present tense in English. In Greek it means an ongoing, continuation of the status quo.

One can not be forgiven until they stop the sin; The Pharisees, who had been attacking Jesus, were relentless. It eventually ended in his death, and even after his death – they continued to say that which he did was evil; when in fact, there was no way to deny that it was Good.

In another place Jesus says “they are Guilty of an Eternal Sin”, for the simple reason that if one continously commits a sin, the sin – by definition – never ends. Forgiveness requires that the sin stop – at least briefly !

James Akin does do a reasonable analysis of the passage; although, he notes the continuous tense in the passage above – he seems to forget it’s importance when speaking about the passage in Hebrews. The issue is identical.

It is impossible to bring someone to repentence, who refuses to quit running around publicly saying “Jesus is a false prophet, and deserved the crucifixion.” on a continuous basis. They have to at LEAST stop the sin, in order to be reasoned with – and brought back to the truth.

A word, spoken against Jesus, will be forgiven, – a continual and endless complaint – can’t be forgiven; it is by definition – an “eternal” sin.

Its really a matter of hardness of heart. It does not mean that if a person is skeptical and thinks that an authentic miracle worker is a fake, but it was a matter of the Pharisees who actually knew it was the work of the Holy Spirit but still said it was the work of the Devil. That does not mean that a person could not be forgiven without exception, but that such hardness and rejection could probably never be reversed humanly speaking. To be so bitter as to know a work of God is from God but to lie and say you think its the devils work is beyond all stubborness.

It is an ongoing willful act that attributes the work of God to the devil.

It’s a refulsel of God’s forgivness and grace and keeping on sinning. 🙂

…again, I’m quite pedestrian… so here it goes…

The sin against the Holy Spirit/Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not simply sin or continuing to sin (Scriptures already settled that: there’s none that is just–not even one); but it is rejecting what Yahweh God has Revealed… Salvation is found only in Christ Jesus… but none can come to the Son if the Father does not Teach and Reveal Him… this of course is done through the Holy Spirit… it is this sin that cannot and is not forgiven because if anyone rejects the Holy Spirit that person cannot be Taught by the Father to seek the Son (Resurrection and Life); as St. Paul admonished:
13 for all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. 14 How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard of him? And how will they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them? (Romans 10:13-14)
By denying that Jesus is performing acts through the Power of the Holy Spirit, the Pharisees’ jealousy blinds them to the Truth:
28 But if it is through the Spirit of God that I drive out devils, then be sure that the kingdom of God has caught you unawares. (St. Matthew 12:28)

There have been good replies already. Just thought I would add that a brief explanation of the saying is given in Mark chapter 3 verse 28-30. The unforgivable sin is looking at Jesus, all that is good, and calling him evil.

hmmm… YHWH + ELOHYM?
yeshyua … YHWH save us.

Pope John paul spoke eloquently on it, too; He starts with this point…

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, then, is the sin committed by the person who claims to have a “right” to persist in evil-in any sin at all-and who thus rejects Redemption. One closes oneself up in sin, thus making impossible one’s conversion, and consequently the remission of sins, which one considers not essential or not important for one’s life. This is a state of spiritual ruin, because blasphemy against the Holy Spirit does not allow one to escape from one’s self-imposed imprisonment and open oneself to the divine sources of the purification of consciences and of the remission of sins.
A coin has two sides, as do many issues.

…for someone who, till today, had not read the cited material, I think I did not make an ash of myself… :D:p

…but I do not see the two sided coin… it seems to me that what I’ve suggested is in direct correlation to the exegeses of the cited theologeans: rejection of the Holy Spirit’s ability to save us from sin or rejection of God’s determinate mode of Salvation (Father to the Son to the Father through the Holy Spirit) is the sin that cannot be forgiven since man, not God, has denied himself the ability to be forgiven.

When i was young and growing up in a pentecostal church, we were told by our youth pastor that making fun of people speaking in tongues, shouting and running the aisles was what this sin was all about and if we did it, we were doomed to Hell.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes, and that means the same thing as “who claims to have a “right” to persist in evil-in any sin at all” ; One can’t even enter heaven even should they love a venial sin. That is what, according to Catholic doctrine, keeps someone in Purgatory.

Come to think of it – that produces a bit of a logical quandry / conundrum !

1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven."136 There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit.137 Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

…wow… I wonder how many were doing so when Christ Jesus brought up the issue?

…it is sad how man can bend Scriptures to suit his personal agenda/belief!

…that’s what I attempted to demonstrate… since Scriptures tell us that none is Just not even one and that all have sinned… it is, at least to me, obvious that it is not just sinning or persisting in sin… since all sin can be forgiven if we turn to God–yet no sin can be forgiven if we reject God’s Reconciliation…

Some years past there was a young man who invited me to his congregation… the people were energetic as were the orators… at the end I was asked to join… but I could not–even if I were not Catholic, I cannot accept the OSAS theology which deems God impotent at man’s determination to sin, live an unrighteous existence and get a free ticket to Heaven!

…there’s one other group which I find even less inviting… this one denies the Divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit while still clinging to knowing the One True God, having Jesus as their Lord and being God’s visible church–I thought hollowood weaved a tangled web! :doh2::doh2::doh2:
