My question is gossip a mortal or veinial sin? Today I was reading something on the internet about someone, would that be considered gossip? I really don’t know. Can someone please help

If the Gossip does grave harm to someone, and one does this with the intent of harming the victim and knows it is wrong, then it is a grave sin. This is usually considered detraction to distinguish it from ordinary gossiping.

Reading something on the internet is probably not even a sin. I read all kinds of stuff about people or hear things about people through media all the time.

So even if it’s in the news and you hear “Person X murders Person Y after Y did this to X” wouldn’t be considered gossip? Would it be sinful to hear/see gossip but not share it? I get the sharing part of it is sinful but I don’t know about the hearing/seeing

Hearing the news is not you gossiping. You aren’t culpable for the content of the news. Also, if the matter is of public interest, it is not gossip. Saying that Person Z murdered person Y is not gossip, nor a sin (unless you know it is not true and repeat it to defame person Z). It is stating a fact about a crime.

Oh, so would gossip Be more of “Did you here that I live near X and I saw him planing to kill Y” kind of thing

No. If you saw someone planning to kill someone, you should tell someone, asap. Gossip would be sharing secrets or embarrassing things about an individual without good reason, or making unkind remarks about a person behind their back or mocking them, etc.

Rash judgement is a sin.

For someone to believe someone committed a crime before all evidence has been collected and examined does not mean it is OK to say that person committed the crime. To do so could be rash judgement, detraction, or gossip.

Is the media guilty of some or all of this? Probably.

Do those who talk about what they read, see, hear in the media magnify the effect of these sins? Probably.

This doesn’t directly answer your question, but I like it, so I’m leaving it here.
