Hi,

What is considered Sacred Tradition and where do we find it?

Where does the Catholic Catechism fall into place?

How much emphasis do we put on the Catechism (AND ALL THE VARIATIONS)?

Is there also a dominant variation we must follow per the local Bishop?

I know the Word of God is Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Are there levels to obedience… is there a name for such a belief?
  1. Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition (ENTAILS?)
  2. Catholic Catechism (or part of Sacred Tradition?)
  3. Encyclicals? (or part of Sacred Tradition?)
  4. …
God Bless You,

Hi,

We find Sacred Tradition in the totality of The Church…In it’s History and consistant teaching of the Truths handed down to us from Christ and the Apostles.
The Scriptures themselves are a part of Sacred Tradition.

The Catechism is a summary of the Teachings of the Church. It is a “sure norm” (JP II’s term) for teaching the catholic faith.
How much emphasis do we put on the Catechism (AND ALL THE VARIATIONS)?
We put a lot of emphasis on the Catechism. As stated above, when the latest addition was released, the Holy Father described it as a “sure norm” for learning and teaching the faith.
Is there also a dominant variation we must follow per the local Bishop?
So far as I know THIS is the current edition of the CCC. If the local bishop has had one built from this for local use…then he would need to inform those in his jurisdiction.

I’m not sure about this one…Hopefully others can clear this one up.

Where do you find it…you will find it in the…“the living and growing truth of Christ contained, not only in Scripture, but in the common teaching, common life, and common worship of the Church. That is why the Tradition that does not change can seem to have changed so much. For this common teaching, life and worship is a living thing-a truth which was planted as a mustard seed in first century Jerusalem and which has not ceased growing since-as our Lord prophesied in Mark 4:30-32. The plant doesn’t look like the seed, but it is more mustardy than ever. And this is an entirely biblical pattern, as we discover when we consider the circumcision controversy in Acts 15.”

In Agius’ book, in my previous post, tradition is defined and exemplified by the handing down of faith. It is this handing down which does not threaten faith, it rather strengthens it, because it ensures that the same truths are passed along.

Scripture is scripture and there are many interpretations. It is tradition and the magisterium of the Church which guarantee the adherence to the original faith of the apostles.

Agius briefly makes an argument that we didn’t need the New Testament, because the Church as growing just fine without it. It is a grace and blessing that we have it of course. but, he is emphasizing just how important tradition was in the early church. How else could rank and file believers know what was right?

The imporance of the teachers and their spiritual lineage back to the apostles was most important to the early church.
