If someone could explain what these acronyms are for?

Much appreciated. 🙂

EF: Extraordinary Form/Traditional Latin Mass (sometimes abbreviated as TLM).

OF: Ordinary Form/Novus Ordo (sometimes abbreviated as N.O.)

Thank you very much.

Ordinary Form is the regular form of the Roman Missal. It is the form of Mass that is to be used always and everywhere.

Extraordinary Form is what the Traditional Latin Mass or Tridentine Mass is referred to nowadays. Because it is not the “common” or “regular” form of Mass offered in most parishes, but we keep it because its part of the rich tradition of the Church.

Except when and where the EF is offered.

That sounds like the reason a relic of the past is kept in a museum. The EF is not a “relic of the past” nor is it in a museum.

I know I’m a little lacking in the language. But what I was trying to say without using the word “ordinary” to describe the “Ordinary Form” is that it is what is normally used (ugh, normally is just a synonym for ordinary) in the Church.

I think you’re reading too much into what I said. I never implied that. The opposite could be easily, “we introduced a new form of liturgy and it replace the one in the past.” So instead I said, “we kept something because its part of our history.” The allusion to a museum is all in your mind.

PP Benedict XVI used the words “Ordinary Form” and that’s the reason the acronym “OF” is used. I don’t know where the “ugh” comes from.

And to say the “opposite” is misleading, if not untrue: PP Benedict XVI affirms that what is now called the EF was never abrogated, which means that it was not “replaced” by what is now called the OF.

Like I explained, I don’t want to use the same word to explain another term that contains the same word. The “ugh” is for using the word “normaly” to describe “ordinarily” or “ordinary” which are basicaly synonyms.

Thats what I said. I said the opposite is that it was abrogated, which isn’t the case. Or to say it in another way, to say it was abrogated is the opposite of what I was trying to say.

Whatever. 🤷

The absolute best way to understand the difference between the Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form is to attend a few Masses of each, one or the other will strike you as spiritually “better” for you. The worst thing you can do is pay attention to the endless discussion of the topic on this or any forum.
