I was reading a book or two (Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Not By Scripture Alone) which refer to “Fundamentalists” and “Evangelicals”. I was wondering if someone could give me a clearer def. of who falls into “Fundamentalism” and “Evangelicalism”? Is is Protestants in general? The Weird Non-Denom. in the Parishoners home meetings people? Just wanted to know so I can say “Oh that is the ‘Fundamentalist’ that Mr. Karl Keating spoke of.” or the like. Thanks and God bless.

Fundamentalists are those who follow the 5 Fundamentals: the inerrancy of the Bible, the virgin birth of Christ, the doctrine of substitutionary atonement, the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and the imminent return of Jesus Christ. They reject the Historic Biblical Criticism method of Bible Study instead following what they believe to be the “plain meaning” of Scripture.

Evangelical is a bigger bucket which could include Fundamentalists. It refers to those who emphasize the conversion story, who emphasize witnessing, who almost always believe in sola scriptura, and who believe that Christ’s redeeming work on the Cross is the only means to salvation and remission of sins.

A hundred people mean a hundred different things when they say those words. The only real solution to your problem is to ask the person who uses them exactly what he means by them.

If I remember right, Keating goes over this in the first chapter of his book.

Fundamentalism
is like Billy Bob’s Church on the corner, at an abandioned strip mall.
