Hi i am having troubles with understanding what line exists as a believer in the Catholic Faith sexually when in comes to dating. What guidlines are there for what is exceptable and what not at all?

The main problem is in dating and relationships with other people who may not be catholic or not follow these practices. The the want more than just kissing…What does the catholic church say beyond this? I understand sex before marraige is obviously frowned upon but are there any other options besides going from one relationship to the next, hoping one girl has the sames beliefs as myself?

It’s my understanding that nothing is acceptable. I’ve heard you can kiss (but not passionately). I’m sure someone will come along with something official (CCC).

It really depends on how far your mind goes. Some disassociate passionate kissing with going any further (which is really too bad). However, in a case like that, where there is no desire to keep going, it is morally acceptable. If going swimming with your girlfriend or fiance causes certain thoughts to enter your mind which would not be moral for other men to have of your future wife, then you need to find something else to do together.

Sex is not only “frowned upon” but it is morally bankrupt as you can find explained elsewhere.

A lot of it comes down to how you and your girlfriend/fiance’s minds work. If when doing a particular activity, such as kissing or swimming, and it repeatedly becomes problematic for you to keep pure thoughts, then you have a moral obligation to find something else to do together.

Hope this helps,

In my experience you will get alot of very opinionated people without much ground to stand on- I’m not saying nobody will have scripture/sound logic to base their opinions on, but most don’t so enter every website as a skeptic (if you resort to googling that is- people here are more careful most of the time).

Personally- we have been told no sex. I assume you accept that. This does not mean anything else is fair game, but it does (to me) mean that nothing else is sinful in and of itself. The difference is you have to know your limits- you have to find out what you are generally capable of before just having fun becomes a near occasion of sin and before a near occasion of sin becomes an all-but certain occasion of sin.

You don’t want a relationship with a girl who would ask you to do something contrary to your beliefs or end a relationship because you won’t indulge her. What does that say about her character? The devotion she would have to you? Her fidelity or trustworthiness?

Dating can be very difficult for a Catholic because the temptation to immorality is very strong. Nevertheless, you need to keep your heart and mind on purity.

To answer the question you originally asked, the Church has no provisions to allow for any kind of extramarital sexual activity whatsoever and the moral law cannot be bent to accommodate the individual beliefs of people who do not share the Church’s idea of human sexuality.

Sex is not only “frowned upon” but it is morally bankrupt as you can find explained elsewhere.
I think this statement needs explanation. Sex is not “frowned upon” or “morally bankrupt” when it is done with chastity and respect for the gift of human sexuality.

Sexuality if a gift from God - Sexuality outside of God’s context. Well I kind of imagine how I would feel if I saw a priest using the Church Chalice as a beer mug.

Okay, excuse me. Before everyone runs rampant with my missing qualifier: extramarital sex is morally bankrupt.

Hi Luke,

The other things you speak of – being?

Petting or touching, showing, etc?

If it is mild sexual foreplay that you are talking about – then what is being discussed are actions which make the other person “feel good” sexually. For example, shimmying up tight against your girlfriend when dancing can feel really good … etc.

Often times these are spontaneous events; some are an intentional progression.
The problem is that there is a point of no return for most men; and often this is not the case with women on a daily basis (there are exceptions), but there are days they can be exceptionally susceptible to the temptation of going just a little bit further. You may be going along fine, and then one day the feeling just becomes intense to the point of being overpowering. I have seen it happen.

I would caution you not to think about this as an issue of legal or illegal; But of emotional involvement and use. If you find your girlfriend closing her eyes and concentrating on being felt, or feeling you – there is a good chance you are the object of a fantasy, and not a person whom she is loving necessarily. Those who can interchange one man for another, or switch rapidly are even more likely to be this kind. If you, yourself, tend to be attracted to looking at certain features, the breastline, etc. that can also signal that there is more chemical attraction of the body than of your mind. There has to be a “spark” of attraction or you wouldn’t date – but there are some which are simply too attractive for some men.

The more you have in common, socially – not sexually – the more satisfying the relationship will likely be. Sexual bonding (even foreplay) desensitizes a person to the more important aspects of a relationship; it causes one to overlook the faults of the other person and is a way of hiding what you are really getting.

There is a stereotype which is half true that tends to make the rounds; A man just wants sex but a woman only does so when she really loves a man.
This isn’t true – but because of coincidences, and peers, it often is easy to believe.
The real danger with this kind of thinking is that it becomes a temptation – if she really loved me, she would go further… But actual motives can be much different; anywhere from, it just happens to be a day she is really susceptible – to pressure from other Girlfriends to be “popular”, conquest, or even money/access to it.
For a man, it can become an ego thing – I am just so handsome the girls get shivers… Look everyone, s/he loves me – I am worth something! (blah blah fill in the blank).

A biology experiment is something of an example of what this type of activity does to a person; Take a frog and drop it in a pot of almost scalding hot water – and it will jump out; but if you put it in a pot of cool water and slowly turn up the heat – the frog will usually stay there until it is cooked to death; Time and feelings are like anesthetics; being used to a feeling can make it very difficult to judge when you are near the danger line.

I think a person ought to ask themselves:
Is she doing this because she thinks it is expected of her, and is her part to “play”?
Does she come from a family where everyone just kisses everyone else – eg: mom, dad, etc.
If it is the latter, and not a passionate thing – but an affectionate, then it will be light, short, and covered with conversation. The same might be true of a pat on the butt by your girlfriend (his butt is sooooo cute). etc. A compliment of sorts.

But these things can also be: “I look Good next to him and he’ll let me do anything. won’t the others be jealous.” etc.

Think about it, and good luck. but if you find the girls “wanting” this, and you feel pressured to do so socially – then think long and hard (soft is better) before you give in; it isn’t easily reversible once you become involved that way.

Hi. You know, this is a question that is near and dear to my heart, because I used to struggle with some of these same issues when I was not married and before I converted to the Catholic faith. I was into a legalistic mindset and dealt with these same questions. I’ll tell you how I have come to terms with this type of question as a practicing Catholic, and you can apply this to almost any activity in which you are engaging. I ask myself, if our Lord physically materialized in the room right now, where I am performing this or that thing, how would I feel? You could also apply it to other things: should I be watching this movie? Should I be reading that book? If our Lord suddenly appeared, would we feel embarrassed at what He is seeing? Would I feel embarrassment if our Lady witnessed whatever activity I was engaging in? I think that we instinctively would know the answers to these questions.

Kissing, hugging and cuddling are to me all ok, so long as you don’t do so in a fashion that really pushes the other person to go further. However anything past that really should be saved for Marriage. If you move past that point, where will it end? If you set very clear guidelines in the beginning of a relationship, it will make things much less frustrating for you and your partner. I know that before my girlfriend and I set very clear boundaries, I was feeling frustrated and anxious about not knowing when the next step would be. Now we just enjoy what we have, and while the temptation to go further is till there, we face it together and hold each other accountable.

Id just like to say thank you to all who took the time to respond to this question. It has given me a lot to think about and has helped me overcome some of the feelings i was having. Thanks again and feel free to keep posting

I draw the line at eye contact 👍

On a more serious note, I heard someone explain to me that sex is like eating a piece of candy. You are forbidden to eat it, but you’re allowed to have a taste. Maybe put it in your mouth to see what the flavor is like, then put it back in the wrapper. You didn’t eat it, true, but who wants slobbery candy?

Keep it wrapped up until after dinner.

Yes I apologize, that sounded creepy. But I still like the analogy.

This is dating.

You go out and have fun but avoid situations for the near occasion of sin and sinful thoughts. That would rule out most movies where cohabiting and fornicating couples are portrayed by attractive actors and as generally happy, the same with people engaging in adultery. Romance has disappeared from most movies and TV shows.

The radio. Avoid stations that are blaring obscene material. Avoid music that makes it sound like immorality is cool.

Today, Catholics should go to other places where they can feel comfortable and uplifted, like a park, museum or Bible study. They should cultivate practicing Catholic friends. They could even do volunteer work together.

There was a time when dating meant you could kiss the girl good night or hold her hand or hug her but that was it. I was there. There was respect, restraint and an understanding that looks may have brought you together but it’s going to take personal compatibility to keep you together.

If you’re 16 or older, you can date. If you’re a little older and still in school, you can go steady with one person. Then, if the two of you really get along, there’s courtship, and both of you getting to know each other’s family.

But no intercourse. No petting or showing. There is no personal opinion here but the combined experience of all men and all women. You should be in a relationship with someone who values modesty, restraint and chastity until marriage. Period. Today, the message being sent is that there is no more shame, no more guilt and no more sin. Got that?

If the two of you want to get married, there’s an engagement period which is meant to get all of the practical issues settled: housing, finances, kids and transportation. If the two of you honor your parents, they can help you take the next step: marriage, which is not to be entered into lightly.

I know too many couples who blew a lot of money on the ceremony and are struggling after. Don’t do that. And let the other person know that you value them for more than their looks. If you’re going to make a commitment before man and God, know that you are making a promise. Too many view No-Fault Divorce as the easy way out.

Learn how to communicate with each other and solve problems before the ceremony. The Bible tells us do not be unequally yoked. This is a partnership we’re talking about. Sex is the last item on the agenda.

Peace,
Ed

Nice post Ed. But at the same time, you shouldn’t try to be holier than God and marry someone you wouldn’t go to bed with. I understand your point, but the way it was written made it sound like sexual attraction means nothing.

“last item on the agenda.” The bed is where you’ll spend the least amount of your time. Between work, cooking, cleaning, repairing everything from the car to the plumbing, paying bills, and watch out if you get sick.

Did you read what I wrote? Looks may bring you together but it’s not what’s going to keep you together. I never used the word “nothing.” Don’t put the cart (sex) before the horse (marriage). I met a total doll at a local gathering. She told me she was divorced. I asked her how long she had been married. She said, nine months. “I had to kick my husband out of my house because I found out he was a nut.”

Did you read that? Apparently, nothing about her husband to be’s behavior prior to marriage revealed he was a nut.

Like I said, she was a total doll. Even the women sitting by her told her she was beautiful. But today, it’s have sex first and ask questions later, way after the ceremony. That was my point. You find out about the person long before the ceremony.

I sat down at the kitchen table and was asked by the young lady’s father: “How do you plan on supporting my daughter?” Fathers, and mothers, need to ask those questions. Because both of them had been young at one time and Know Exactly What It’s Like to be blinded by good looks that you forget the Practical Details which will occupy both of your lives for, hopefully, a very long time.

I’ve been blessed to know some wonderful couples who loved God and each other and knew what marriage means.

Peace,
Ed

I myself am single. A virgin, never married, never will. Much in spiritual life is far more desirable. Neither do I mock marriage. ("When they shall rise from the dead, they shall neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as angels which are in heaven (“Mark 12:35”)
It is preferable to marry than burn in hell. Indeed their are two kinds of marriages…one born in heaven and one in hell. What is exceptable sexually before marriage? No Sex.

👍

That sounds about right. I wish I saw more relationships like yours.
You have hope for each other and are able to hold a boundary; that is also a personality trait easy for some – but must be cultivated by others – diligently.
Especially when a person is susceptible to strong feelings of being lonely.

🙂

I would advise to avoid anything that would cause you or her to dwell on lustful feelings.
