The Padre at the church near where I live has told me that I need to have faith. I do not want to insult him by asking what faith is, because he has been a big help with just talking me through several difficult things that have been going on in my life recently.

So a simple question: What is faith and where do I have to go to get it?

I’m guessing it’s not something that I can order from amazon.com or ebay.

Faith is belief without evidence or proof.

In a religious context, your Padre is telling you that you need to trust God to work out all of the difficult things that are going on in your life.

As far as where you go to get it, well, I would advise practice, practice, practice. Just keep telling yourself God will work it out, pray about it asking him to do so, etc.

It won’t always “work”, you will still have periods of fear and anxiety, but as you practice putting your trust in God (having faith in him), these periods will get shorter and further apart.

Good luck and God bless!

It is the supernatural virtue by which we believe what God has revealed and commanded, not because we judge it to be true or can prove, but solely by the authority of God who does not deceive.

For example, we believe by faith that if we live as disciples of Christ–even if it seems to bring suffering and difficulty in this life–we will be saved. We have faith that God loves us and therefore the crosses He allows us to bear will work for good. We can’t prove this accept to trust God that He is not deceiving us. Some other examples: we believe by faith that Christ is Really Present in the Eucharist based solely because God has said so; the same that the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Etc., etc., etc.

The counter-example is Adam and Eve. God said don’t eat the fruit. The serpent said that’s unreasonable, don’t trust God. Adam and Eve placed their faith in the serpent and in themselves rather than believing Gof with faith.

An excellent little book on faith by Rabbi David Wolpe, a renaissance man. This little book on *Why Faith Matters *is filled with thoughtful quotes, stories, and erudition on the topic of faith. I’ve made a couple reading selections from it and hope it will encourage you to find the book and read it. For even if you have faith, as a Christian you will interact with many who do not and it is important to know what you may have missed in the journey to faith.

A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believes things only because his pastor says so, or the assembly so determines, without knowing any other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy.
Milton, Areopagitica

Just simple. Read the bible. An answer to your question is written in it:

[bibledrb]Hebrews 11:1[/bibledrb]

How do you get faith? The first thing you must do is ask for it because it is written:

[bibledrb]Matthew 7:7[/bibledrb]

Now the following is not in the Bible, but you could read the fulfilled prophecies and all the Bible truths that are in it.

Look at nature and see the proof of the fact that God created it.

But the most important thing is: read the Bible. Read as often as you can. Start with whatever book you like with. I would say New Testament, but you can even begin with Genesis. Make a habit of reading the Word daily. This will let God reveal part of Himself to you.

EDIT 1:

I have found a passage that proves that you can read the Bible to increase your faith.

[bibledrb]Romans 10:17[/bibledrb]

[bibledrb]2 Timothy 3:16[/bibledrb]

Scripture is god-breathed. It’s not the only thing God speaks trough, but it’s the only book you know that I’m 100% sure that is His word.

Now read the message that comes trough the Word to increase your faith.

Thank you for putting in small words and simple terms.

Cristian B ---- I will try reading the bible once I can get my hands on a copy of it.

Admittedly I am not a christian or catholic or anything else. I never paid that much attention to religion at all prior to a few weeks ago. I have tried praying but as I don’t know how to do it, it’s frustrating and feels wrong to be begging for help and not know who I’m asking.

Faith is a gift from God. Pray for it. That sounds rather simplistic, but it is actually what we are told to do.

When I think about it, I realize how much of my everyday life is lived on faith. Perhaps we don’t call it the supernatural virtue of faith, but it is natural faith. We believe in things we can’t see or know all the time, but we see the evidence of them. I cannot see gravity, but I am confident that when I walk, something is going to keep me attached to the ground and not floating all over the place. I can’t remember my birth, but my birth certificate states I was born to a certain woman and man, so in faith I accept that evidence.

So it is with God, but that seems a lot harder to us than natural faith. But if we ask Him for the gift of faith, He will open our eyes to the evidence of Him that is all around us. If we are willing to believe in Him, He will give us this gift. Just the act of praying for faith takes faith, because when we pray (which is also a gift), we believe that someone is hearing our prayers.

And when I am having a hard time believing I often pray the quote from Scripture “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief”. I think the key to the whole thing is prayer.

Even atheists live by faith, but what they do wrong is the fact they put their faith in what they shouldn’t. We must put our faith in god, while they put their faith in the created, not in the Creator.

My short definition of faith is “an act of the will by which one adheres to another who is known”.

The Hebrew word aman is translated as “believe”, “trust”, “have faith”, and also “support”, “nourish”, and “make lasting”. A derivative word is omenat, meaning “pillars” or “supports of the door” as in 2 Kings 18:16. Another cognate is emunah, which is “faithfulness” or “trust”, as in Exodus 17:12 where God brought victory to Israel as long as Moses would hold his hands up. Aaron and Hur held up his hands so that they “remained emunah until sundown”. All of these illustrate that faith is an action that we take, which is exactly what the Catholic church teaches. Faith is a work, it’s about what you DO and not merely about what you believe.

We are not able to do this work by our own effort because of the effects of original sin. Each and every time we turn toward God and away from sin it is because God gave us at that moment the grace to be able to do it. It is completely and totally due to the grace of God, who enables all of us at some point in our lives to perform the work of freely responding to Him by performing the “obedience of faith”. At that moment we truly have the choice that Adam had, to submit to God or submit to ourselves, and we only have that choice because of God’s grace.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church expresses this by saying that faith is an act of the will in which one turns toward God and away from sin; in which we decide that we will cooperate, with our intellect and will, with the divine grace that God gives us to enable us to comply with the moral law; it is a free response of the human person to the initiative of God; it is a personal adherence of the whole man to the God who reveals himself. It is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that he has said and revealed to us, and that HolyChurch proposes for our belief, because he is truth itself. By faith “man freely commits his entire self to God.” For this reason the believer seeks to know and do God’s will. “The righteous shall live by faith.” Living faith “work through charity.”

These are all actions, things we do in obedience to God. Thus the Apostle Paul says in Romans 1:5 "Through Him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith…” This obedience is the essence of Christianity: submission to the Eternal One who was enfleshed, and through that submission being brought into union with Him so that we may participate in His divine life.

It’s important to understand that the Catholic view is not that we are a spirit stuck in a body, nor are we a composite of a body, a soul and a spirit as is commonly held among Protestants. God created us as a body/soul unity, not two things stuck together but one whole. As we pray with our minds using words, so we also pray with our bodies using actions. As we submit to God with our wills, so we also submit with our deeds. To speak of “faith” as separate from “works” is schizophrenic, because faith is the assent of our minds enfleshed in our actions.

Faith is most certinaly NOT “belief in something without proof or evidence”. That’s called “credulity”.

Hmm well i guess i cannot be an atheist then, what to you call someone that does not believe in god, and does not put their faith in the ‘created’?

100% correct. I also have to say i admire your honesty.
We have been through this evidence stuff time and time again. There is a difference between evidence and proof. We have evidence for God, you just do not accept it.

Faith is what you are exercising when you turn the key in your car and expect the motor to turn over, or when you flip a light switch and expect the light to start doing whatever it was not doing a moment ago (being on, or being off). If you’re like most people, you do these things without knowing exactly how they work. If something goes wrong, you don’t just decide that you can’t trust cars, or lights, and then never try again - you call in an expert to find and fix the problem.

In the same way, we also don’t need to know how God works, to pray to Him and trust that He hears us. One of the first things you will want to ask Him is to give you the gift of faith. Say, “I want to believe - help me get past my doubts.”

No, you don’t. You have NOTHING testable… 🤷
