Question for you. Could this be an indefinite standoff or at some point could the Church step in either SOLT or some other Church office and pursue laicization in the Church’s best interest?
Usually priests who want to be laicized (perhaps to marry) usually request and get granted a rather quick laitization (sorry, I’m probably butchering the spelling here). Fr. Mary Francis Stone for example.

If a priest doesn’t request it, the church can automatically do so in about 4 years, however in many cases they don’t bother?? I know a few priests who have been laicized and they said it was done quickly and quietly. Fr. Groeshel, I believe, has a small, quiet ministry that ministers to such priests.

But its very true that Fr. Corapi is still gathering his “fans” (his words) and attempting to sell a new CD release tomorrow ($19.95 for a 4 hour audio CD on abortion). His “fans” are quite… well, check out his facebook page and see. They tend to name calling, dissing bishops and even badmouthing priests quite viciously… call folks on other sites who are praying for Father “satanists”, “morons” and worse. Father is not moderating his facebook page and it is quite embarrassing to see a priest’s page filled with hate and nastiness…

So I and many others are waiting to see if the Church will finally just laicize Father to try and stem the flow of rather “out there” followers on his site.

He announced he was starting a new site on Monday, August 15. His fans are all excited.

To All,

I have been reading through these Fr. Corapi threads and am quite disheartned at some of the lack of charity I am running into. We are fellow Catholics some of us, and yet we dare to presume to judge one of God’s priests. That judgement is reserved to God alone.

A word, who are we to judge another person??? It does not matter whether he is back on drugs or not, we should not be judging him, we should be praying for him. I am sure there is more to this situation than is getting out to the press. And besides in the end, if he dies in a state of sanctfying grace will this matter in the end of things? I don’t think so. I don’t think if we all by the grace of God make it to heaven will be holding this over Fr. Corapi’s head.

It is not for us to comment on these things, our job is to support him in prayers and treat him as we would treat Jesus Christ. Remember what you do to another you do to Christ.

Let the Church handle this, withold making judgments, and pray for Fr. Corapi.

Let us love as Jesus did and be willing to forgive as he did. And let us realize that each in our own ways are wretched sinners too.

God bless Fr. Corapi and thank you Lord for the many years he got your TRUTH out there. Please help him in all the areas that he is in most need of. St. Peter intercede for Fr. Corapi. All you holy priests pray for him. Mary, Immaculate Conception enfold him under your mantle and lead him to a closer Union with Your Son.

God bless.

I agree with the above poster but this thread is not about what Fr’s status is with drugs while some posters have tried to make it that way. It is about his canonical status as this may affect how some may use his materials, quotes, etc in Church studies. While the validity of the teachings is still good some may have a very hard time using these materials depending on what the Canonical status is and would like to have it cleared up. This is the world of public ministry.

according to Corapi himself, it is “an end of an era”.
I fear pride has gotten the best of him. If he were still true to the church, as he claims, he would take one look at his rabid followers and how they are failing in their duty to be shepherded by the church and point them back in the right direction, saying “this is my cross to bear, follow the bishops.”

Instead, he goes on about how it’s the end of an era. And this is the problem with hero worship in the church… it can go to your head and blow you up. Pride is, after all, the basest of the seven deadly sins and one of the devil’s strongest weapons.

I pray for Father Corapi that he can subvert his pride, that he can trust the church to be honest in its investigation, that he can come back to the church until the situation is resolved, and especially that he will turn his followers from the blindness of their cult of personality and back to true allegiance to the church rather than to himself.

i hope I’m not too far out of line here, but this guy always seemed to me to be a little bit too overbearing, almost intimidating, in the way that he preached. Some of you may like that style, but I always found him to be a bit of a bully. Whenever he came on EWTN, I had to change the channel.

Whenever I would listen to his talks, I heard about a version of Catholicism that was very powerful and awe-inspiring. It helped me understand why the martyrs gave their lives for the Faith. He was tough, and helped me understand that the politically-correct version of Catholicism I was seeing all over my diocese (at the time- the diocese has since undergone a transformation that is nothing short of miraculous) was not the way things were meant to be.

His new blog is up. Its the same location as the old one. No mention of God. No mention of Mary (on the Feast of her Assumption no less). Lots of mentions about his stuff for sale, lots of mentions of himself, “me” and “I” and a nice mention of his dashing picture on his Fat Boy Harley-Davidson on the back of one of his items. Comes across as arrogant and narcissistic, but your mileage may differ.

Looks like he’s finally ditching the dark dog logo that was so unsettling - that’s a grace!

Lots of folks on his BSD facebook page seem to be lining up to buy, buy, buy, I guess, but I’m not spending my hard-earned money on anyone less than 100% in the good graces of our Holy Mother Church.

You make a good point.

If a priest is no longer authorized to preach or teach, can you use their materials?

Should people throw out their Fr. Corapi tapes?

But there does have to be some kind of “judging” on his future activities if they are not in line with Church teachings and some warning that it is quite possible that the charges against him could have some truth to them. We can’t just blindly accept that he hasn’t down anything wrong and pretend to go on accepting him as a leader in the faith when he may no longer warrent that respect or leadership. We shouldn’t crucify him, nor should we still pretend there isn’t something serious taking place with this man and his ministry. People should proceed with caution.

It is very troubling to me, his current activities and attitude towards the whole matter. I’m not one to give him the green light that everything he does and says from this point on is acceptable and helpful to my Catholic faith.

The only thing missing is the definitive truth of what did or did not happen. At this point, we really don’t know what WILL happen.

I can only suspect that he strayed. However, love the sinner, hate the sin. Pray for a meaningful, positive outcome to everyone.

The only thing judgemental I saw was a singular comment about him being back on drugs (which we don’t know and should not comment on). Other than that, we are fully within our rights to discuss Fr. Corapi’s situation. He is known for his outspoken and bold defense of the Faith, and now he is ignoring the Church. As long as we don’t pass judgement, as I have only seen 1 person do so far, there is no reason not to talk about it.

His blog site being filled with hateful speech is noteworthy as a compass for the direction his ministry is headed. His lack of obedience is noteworthy (though should not be judged) because he has been made a role model for Catholics for many years.

I do love Fr. Corapi, and I pray for whatever it is he needs. And I also realize that charity does not come absent of Truth and Fr. Corapi himself was very big on this…charity without compromising the Truth.

Of course you can use the tapes, they are still aligned with the teachings of the Church as much as they were before this thing blew up. However, I would not use those tapes for public teaching because the author is giving scandal and that could affect the final goal of the teaching process.

You raise some valid points. I have only heard some of Fr. Corapi’s earlier tapes and was quite moved by them. However I have not been keeping up with his ministry nor have I been keeping up will all of the sad news about his ordeal. I neither defend nor deny any of the gossip. But like many I am interested in hearing any update to the investigation and that is what I thought the intention of this thread was all about. But when you mention things that are noteworthy, I believe that it is also noteworthy that the originator of this thread is the one who posted what came across as malicious speculation concerning drug use. So now I am beginning to question the motive for starting another thread. I have no desire to rehash old news.

“Cult of personality” types are always to be viewed with suspicion. Whether they be priests, politicians, movie stars or golf buddies.

Its fine for a priest to have a dynamic personality. It’s NOT fine for him to use his vocation as a money-making business. Its also NOT fine for him to buck his superiors, or defy their wishes, or be a source of scandal.

A priest I have admired for many years now, Maryknoll Father Roy Bourgeois, is going through a terrible time right now with his order. I love me some Father Bourgeois. BUT the individual priest must submit to the will of his superior, regardless of the priest’s opinion or feelings on the subject.

Peace,

I think being dismissed from the Marynoll Order and facing excommunication is a little bit more than " going through a terrible time" !

No doubt. Please pardon the understatement.

Even though Father Corapi and Father Bourgeois seem to have very little in common, they are both in the situations they are in primarily (at least in my very humble opinion) because ego makes it impossible to submit their wills to that of the Church.

It’s just a sad situation all around.

Peace,
Hopefully, if I might steal a bit from Dante’s Divine Comedy, this is the rock of humility God is placing on both of them to grind their pride from them. God often puts crosses in our path to lead us in the right way, but may they both see their error and soon!

As for his new website, it contains some disturbing statements. In the “about” page it states: “John Anthony Corapi (born 20 May 1947) is a Catholic priest from the United States.”
While that is technically true, it is awfully misleading.

Another line is: “Fr. Corapi is now a member of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.”
Once again technically true, but…

There’s no mention of being away from his order or no longer being in active ministry. I find those statements to be quite troubling.
