To be fair though, continental Freemasonry can be quite a bit different (I would say nutty) than American/English/Commonwealth Freemasonry.

there are indeed many Catholic freemasons-although I would presume that they are excommunicated in principle when they join

40% of my lodge is made up of Catholics; a few are in the KofC as well, in fact one of them is also a high ranking member of the KofC. I asked one of the members of the lodge about the churches position regarding freemasonry and he told me that he did not agree with the church on this especially since he joined (over 20 years ago) and has found nothing that is in conflict with the churches teachings.
