This Lent I’ve decided to exercise a gentle discipline, almost like St. Therese’s Little Way.
This Lent, God isn’t telling me to go above and beyond in my duties or sacrifices, He’s telling me to be mindful of the little things. For example, the shrine I put up outside had to be dismantled (long story) so I decided to build one out of wood. But my efforts were frustrated (I am power-tool inept) and it came out looking like…well…
I think God is saying, “That’s a nice effort, but why don’t you take the dogs for a walk instead? Why not call your shut-in friends? Why not do the things you’re supposed to do instead of making grand plans?”
I think, also, that God is telling me to take a break from my anxieties – to enjoy the moments He has created. To trust Him in this way. I am called to take the time to use the tools He has given to me so we can heal my soul – the end result is giving Him more of myself; I think attitude this will last long after Lent.
Also as far as the little things go, I need to learn how to accept compliments. I need to accept that God talks to me through others, and to accept both compliments and correction with grace.
Yes, this Lent is different because I’m not giving up on things, but making an effort to develop the virtues that I would like to see in all of God’s people, such as patience and kindness. I am not griping at the driver who cuts me off, or becoming impatient with retail people who make mistakes. Instead, I am being gentle in my corrections of others and myself. And the more I practice, the easier it comes.
This Lent I have given myself permission to grow closer to the Lord through being mindful of what I’m supposed to do, and realize that all my best laid plans may not be God’s plans.
