what is the basic understanding of grace?

Supernatural grace?

How can i get a deeper grasp more simply on this?

To me, grace is unmerited help from God.

Scripture says ‘my grace is sufficient’.

This is an example, I think is ‘actual grace’, which differs from ‘sanctifing grace’, but then I am really not sure, I just know it is God’s grace. Have you ever noticed those times that you can pray with such ease, you are aware of the power of the prayer coming out within you. That is grace in my mind, simply because I know I don’t pray like tha all the time. There is a ‘supernatural annointing’ on the payer - a power of prayer that is not always present - it is the power of God’s grace in the prayer.

From New Advent:
Actual Grace
Code:
Grace (*gratia, Charis*), in general, is a supernatural [gift of God](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06553a.htm) to intellectual creatures (men, [angels](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01476d.htm)) for their eternal salvation, whether the latter be furthered and attained through salutary acts or a state of holiness.
Before the Council of Trent, the Schoolmen seldom distinguished actual grace from sanctifying grace. But, in consequence of modern controversies regarding grace, it has become usual and necessary in theology to draw a sharper distinction between the transient help to act (actual grace) and the permanent state of grace (sanctifying grace). For this reason we adopt this distinction as our principle of division in our exposition of the Catholic doctrine. In this article we shall treat only of actual grace. (See also SANCTIFYING GRACE.)
Actual grace derives its name, actual, from the Latin actualis (ad actum), for it is granted by God for the performance of salutary acts and is present and disappears with the action itself. Its opposite, therefore, is not possible grace, which is without usefulness or importance, but habitual grace, which causes a state of holiness, so that the mutual relations between these two kinds of grace are the relation between action and state, not those between actuality and potentiality. Later, we shall discuss habitual grace more fully under the name of sanctifying or justifying grace.

It is actually very simple to understand, and at the same time extremely beautiful.

There are two kinds of grace: “Sanctifying grace” and “actual grace”. I’ll explain sanctifying grace first.

**Sanctifying grace: ** Sanctifying grace is the supernatural life of God Himself. Because of original sin, when man is born into this world he is separated from the life of God. When he is “reborn” through baptism, the very life of God Himself is infused into the soul, and the person is reborn on the spiritual level. At this point, we become, as the Bible says, the "adopted"children of God. We then possess two natures: a human nature, and the divine Nature. The Bible expresses this when it says we have become “partakers of the Divine nature”.

When you hear that a person is “in the state of grace” it means that they have this supernatural life of God within them. If a person dies with this life of God in their soul, they are saved; if they die without it, they will be forever separated from God.

It is called “grace” because it is freely given. It is not something we earn in any way. It is something so great that we can do nothing to gain it. It is freely given, and as such is called “grace”.

“Mortal sin” removes this life of God (grace) from our soul. Through the mercy of God, we can again obtain this life of God through confession. Just as baptism gives supernatural life to a soul that has never possessed it, so too confession restores that supernatural life to the soul that lost it.

Actual grace: Unlike sanctifying grace, which is is something that indwells the person, actual grace only enlightens our mind to a paricular truth, and moves our will. Actual grace is sometimes referred to as an “inspiration” of God. It is given to move us to do good, and to avoid evil.

All men recieve actual grace - even the worst of sinners. Actual grace does not save a person, but is simply meant to move a person towards God and away from evil. If a person follows all of the actual grace they receive, they will end in the Catholic Church, since it alone is the True Church, towards which the inspirations of God lead.

There’s much more that can be said. If anything wasn’t clear, or if you have any follow up questions, please let me know.

this was very good thank you.

Would anyone else care to post to clarify this further?

so would holy water, relics, the scapular and other sacrementals bring forth actual grace or sanctifying grace?
