What is Grace?

I have been a Catholic all my life, yet I am not sure if I understand what grace is. I would like to know how merits obtain grace for us and others. Also can you explain what merits are? Do we lose grace when we sin? If so how do we replace this grace and what are the best ways to obtain graces from God?
